And, seriously? Here are 5 that I found with a quick search on Musician's Friend, and 2 additional that I happen to know about:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/usb-microphones/audio-technica-at2005usb-cardioid-dynamic-handheld-usb-xlr-microphone

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/usb-microphones/gem-sound-handheld-usb-microphone

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/usb-microphones/shure-sm58-and-x2u-xlr-to-usb-digital-bundle

http://www.samsontech.com/samson/products/microphones/usb-microphones/q1u/

http://www.samsontech.com/samson/products/microphones/usb-microphones/q2u/

This is an incomplete list. Also, just because I listed it, it doesn't necessarily mean that I would recommend it. However, listen to the audio samples of the last 2 mics. I'd definitely be 100% happy with those.

Samson has audio samples of the Q1U and the Q2U and they have a fantastic quality to them: very warm, crisp and just very nice. So, I would say that the demonstrator was probably about 4-6 inches away from the mic.
They both sound fairly poor compared to what I've heard of the cheaper USB condensers, no life or snap. The Blue Yeti definitely sounds better to me, at least as far as recording vocals for a podcast style purpose.

For what he wants to do, they sound more than fine to me. Yes, the Yeti is way better, but it's also a large diaphragm condenser and it's made by Blue. I mean, damn: the Yeti is a $100+ mic and the Samsons are probably like $30 and $50.

I'm quite picky.

Also he wouldn't need extra equipment for gates/eq/comp etc, good software would do it too.

Not 'free' as such, but they could be acquired using 'grey area' methods which it doesn't seem appropriate to discuss.

Well, then it might cost him extra. I wish he were here. lol We have no idea what his budget is, if he's frugal, wealthy, comfortable... meh. Still, I think we're making a great team here because between all of us, this guy is gonna be able to make quite an informed decision. lol

Oh, and I was wrong before: this isn't for Slayem, but it's for the guy he knows.
