It wouldn't surprise me if it isn't but that's the only official source I'm aware of for retail/consumers.

It's possible, hardest part is getting the ISO without a Windows 8.1 key, but from what I've been told you need to clean install 8.1 using a generic trial key etc. then change to your Windows 8 key after installing; Microsoft has really tried to stop the practice for some reason and seem to force consumers down the upgrade install from 8 to 8.1 via store method.

Are we able to grab this from Windows Update yet or is it still ISO only?

If you have automatic updates turned on, it will push it to you. If not, you will have to run windows update manually. But it is not a "go to this page, download, install" , it is all handled by windows update.

No, Windows 8.1 installation media use different set of keys, though you can use Windows 8.1 keys on Windows 8.1 Update 1 without any problem.

If you still however, want to perform a clean install then there are two ways to do that: search for "ei.cfg" removal - this basically disables product key requirement during installation OR you can use one of those "generic keys" to get the job done (as mentioned above) and then change product key from PC info. thumb.gif

"Warning

Don't format your hard drive before installing Windows. Your current version of Windows must be running when you begin installing Windows 8.1 or Windows 8."

Wanted to do a clean install, not an upgrade... so that seems like not what I want...

So... if I have a Windows 8 key, which I have many of. I need to download the Windows 8 ISO, then upgrade to 8.1 using the Windows Update function. I cannot just download the 8.1 ISO since it uses different keys right?

You can find a generic 8.1 key that you can use to install 8.1. Windows will not activate afterwards. You can then click on "change product key" and input your 8 key. It will accept your 8 key and activate.

The other method is google search for "ei.cfg". It's a text file. If you fill it with the right contents and put it into the right folder on your installation disc or USB stick, the Windows installation will not ask for a product key. You can then use that to install 8.1 without key and later set it to your 8 key.

So is it officially out now and I'm already running 8.1 so why it called again 8.1?
