Power Supply Question

My power supply died and I found a good deal on eBay. The Output Specs match perfectly (where it says +5V : 20A, and, +3.3V : 24A and stuff like that). However, the Input spec does NOT match. On my power supply that died, it says 120V : 10A, and on the good deal one on eBay, it says 120V : 9A.

Is that okay? Is it just the output specs that matter? Would the "9A" thing on eBay actually be better because that means it only needs 9A to get the job done, whereas my power supply needed to draw 10A?

Or am I like totally confused? redface.gif

What is the brand, wattage, efficiency of the PSU ?? Could you post a link ???

Also, what are your other system specs ??? CPU, GPu, motherboard etc etc

I was hoping you wouldn't ask, it's embarassing because it's an old computer and you're going to think it's way under specd. But it's worked perfectly for 15 years and I don't want "a better one" I just want to know if the fact the new one says 9A for the input and my old dead one says 10A for the input matters?

As far as an old system goes, if it is any of those OEM systems, then the commercially available PSU's may not fit. Hence, could you please give what system and what replacement PSU are we talking about ??

Heh, youve skipped over all the problems with bad caps that occurred around 2001. If the output specs match the old one, you may be fine and the newer one is just more efficient. However, some psu specs are just plain made up. There are no psu police and printing labels doesnt cost much. Thats why you should use a reputable brand.
Also make sure the new psu has the same physical dimensions as the old one.

haha that's a cute answer (I skipped all the problems around 2001), I'm glad I did something right! Same power supply for 15 years! But, anyway, YES the Output Specs match perfectly, the only difference is the Input 9A.

I really don't know what that means "120V -- 9A." Does that if my computer is drawing all the maximums offered by all the output specs, e.g. +5V —— 20A, +3.3V —— 24A, +5VSB —— 2.25A, +12V —— 8A, -12V —— 0.25A, then does that mean the NEW Power Supply would be sucking 9 amps out of my wall, whereas my OLD power supply (the "120V -- 10A" one) needed to suck 10 amps from my wall?? Do I have that concept correct? Or not?

Yes and no. Of course, youre not drawing 10 or 9 amps power from the wall, that would be 120 volts times 10 amps = 1200 watts. The specs you have there are for a 300watt power supply*, but typically depending on your system, youre only going to draw 100 watts total.

*Multiply each of the voltages by their amperages to get wattage, then add the wattages up to see the power supply rating.
