I feel like I'm going crazy

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
I am having issues with the display driver for my r9 270X crashing. I've tried the current, and latest beta drivers but it still happens. So I'm trying to use an older driver but no matter what version I download, none of them have the actual video drivers.

I just downloaded 13.9 and when installing it only gives the option to install:

AMD Catalyst Install Manager
Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x86)
HDMI Audio Driver
Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x64)
AMD Catalyst Control Center

After going through with the install, it acts like no video drivers were installed.

If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it.

Did you come across any error that said "failed to install package" or something similar ?? Also, do you remove traces of earlier driver by using driver sweeper or do you do it on the existing ones ??

No error, and yes I used the amd cleanup utility.

I tried this with my set-up, however, i did come across this error:

Un-install drivers with AMD driver installation file-> shutdown and remove the card -> boot to safe mode and use driver sweeper to get rid of any leftover files -> shutdown and install the card and then boot to windows and continue the installation.

The reason i say this is because, my system too would only install the redistributable packages

So after doing that it would install the correct drivers? It's really weird because it installs them with 13.12 and up, but they disappear on any of the "older" releases.

That's because 290x support was included in 13.11 beta 6. Before that the previous installer wouldn't recognize that model as a valid string.

If you crash a lot on multiple drivers and situations then it may be failing hardware.

Just happened again so I checked my event viewer, says amdkmdap is what failed. Googling it, it looks like it's an issue with windows files.

Found a temp solution, after reading over this page: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=361628 One guy said this:

I believe there is a GPU use issue regarding using a web browser... (not the browsers fault, its a driver bug). I notice if I am playing a video in mpc-hc and using Firefox on 8.960, the system freezes. If I just do one of the other, no issues (even if the video is paused). 12.4 should be out shortly.

I figured it was worth a shot, and sure enough, the error never happens when I have my browser closed. (I had this to a near 100% repro using the secret world on ultra, and it hasn't crashed once since launching it while firefox was closed)

Hopefully the final release of the beta drivers will fix this because i don't wanna do a full re-install of windows.
