2.7m vs 6m seems amazing to me for an expansion.

Not sure how reliable this is but it shows that D2: LoD outsold D2. *shrugs* Also, D3 sold for 3M in a DAY. Didn't it take about a week to get to 2.7M?

Over time Lord of Destruction sold more copies than Diablo II did. Respective to their release years, both set records of sales.

Lord of destruction isn't a stand alone expansion... people buying more LOD then the original would make no sense, they wouldn't be able to play it. Those numbers must count bundles as only LOD or something.

Also D2 LOD might be one of the best expansion packs ever made for a game... it would be more fair to compare D3 with age of empires vs age of empires: rise of rome, or something like that.

At one point in time you could buy LoD and get Diablo II for free, as a bundle. Not sure how much that offsets the difference in sales, but it is weird to see an expansion sell more than the game it supports.

I want to say LoD sold about 200,000 to 500,000 more copies than D2, so it wasn't a MASSIVE disparity.

There was "Brawling" that the original dev team finally released under pressure after over a year of broken promises, but that just ended up pissing people off even more due to how shoddy it was. tongue.gif

If you counted the bundles properly (count both a sale of D2, and a sale of D2 LOD), then the expansion wouldn't register as selling more.

Anyways going back to comparing with a different game... Age of Empires sold 3 million copies, and it's expansion Rise of Rome sold 1 million... so unless RoS sales drop off, it's been a very sucessful expansion

The thing is you don't know that. The sales numbers could have already taken that into consideration. I personally do not see the merit of comparing D3 to a game from an entirely different franchise. Why do you think it is unfair to compare D3 and D3: RoS to D2 and D2: LoD? As its successor (not really, but lets call it that), it entirely should be compared to the success of the predecessor. It also needs to be mentioned that both D2 and D2: LoD won a plethora of awards. I don't remember D3 winning anything noteworthy. It DID get nominated plenty for Most Disappoint GOTY. tongue.gif That being said, considering how pathetic D3 was, Blizzard really had no direction to go in but up with RoS. biggrin.gif

Nobody (or almost nobody tongue.gif) bought D2 LOD to sit there and stare at the box, so I don't really understand where you're trying to go with your argument tongue.gif.

D2 was an amazing and groundbreaking game on many levels, D3 isn't and never will be. If you compare most games to D2, they are crap... that doesn't mean D3 isn't a good game on it's own. The sooner people stop comparing D3 to D2, I think the sooner they can enjoy D3 for what it is.
