Looking for awesome 2.0 speakers - any ideas? - Page 2

Get a lepai T-amp and grab a pair of on sale's Energy from Fry's. Should be able to grab everything for less than $100 and they will sound better than most 2.1 pc speakers if not all of them.

These are not bad for the money.
He's probably going to end up going with something like that. Being able to plug a tablet or phone in, no fuss no muss, seems to be something that he wants.

if got these Yamaha Power speakers DM-01 for $14 (with box and owners manual..in excellent condition these actually make rather nice pc speakers indeed.)

I'll nudge him this way. There's a thrift shop nearby and enough garage sales in the summer that this might be a good option. biggrin.gif

But as far as buying off Amazon or Frys - not likely. We're both in Canada, so some of these things cost twice as much up here.

I did find these:
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=2222103841&vpn=31730936100&manufacture=Genius
http://www.geniusnet.com/Genius/wSite/ct?xItem=16696&ctNode=148&mp=1

I'll be searching to see if I can find reasonable prices on the other stuff, but so far it looks like it costs a minimum of 50% more up here for Micca speakers and those amps.

Appreciate all the suggestions so far! thumb.gif

The OCN recommendations speaker section for some recommendations.

Usually when you are looking for speakers you can only choose 2 options from the following 3:
1. Good
2. Cheap
3. Speakers

EDIT: I would recommend passive option and steer clear from the ones you mentioned:
Lepai LP-2020A+
Micca Speakers

Do you have to buy any wires or does all that stuff come with the Micca speakers/amp?

I am going to buy those two you edited in your links... how do I do it though? where does it plug into my sound card on my computer?

you will need to buy some speakers wire and rca cable (likely 3.5mm to rca if using it with your computer ..but double check)

optional you might want to replace the power supply that comes with the lepai as the included 2A (usually) units are notorious for being noisey and limiting the performance of the amp

this is $7~ well spent really imho

If I had to guess, you need stuff like this:

http://products.ncix.com/detail/cables-to-go-3-5mm-stereo-7b-55670-1684.htm
http://products.ncix.com/detail/ngear-3-5mm-to-3-5mm-3-audio-fd-49377.htm
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=4215964&vpn=29176&manufacture=C2G%20%28CABLES%20TO%20GO%29

Looks like it takes 3.5mm and RCA as inputs, and outputs over speaker wires. I would just get a male to male 3.5mm cable and plug one end into the green on my soundcard and the other into the amp. Then you need "speaker wire" (whatever that is) to connect to the Micca speakers.

In that case you might want a male to male RCA cable instead, as most TVs can output audio to RCA.

so if people are in the US, I generally have used this speaker wire:

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10239&cs_id=1023903&p_id=2749&seq=1&format=2

cables

6ft RCA

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021803&p_id=659&seq=1&format=2

or

6ft 3.5mm (green pc audio out jack) to RCA

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021817&p_id=9300&seq=1&format=2

they have other lengths / other cable options

if using a t-amp with your TV / Cable box I'd check the manual and see if it has preouts or just line out.. cause if it is line out you are going to have to get up and go to the amp to adjust the volume every time you want to adjust it..

with a TV senario might be better off with something like this really :
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/denavr1513/denon-avr-1513-5.1ch-home-theater-receiver-3d-ready/1.html

remote/ HDMI / sub out... 5.1 bigger but if you can make room it would be better for the TV scenario I would say.
