Also People that think the gtx780 is a potential better overclocker because you can mod your bios to send more power to the card. Well guess what, you can do the same for a 290.
Underwater with a modded bios really it will be the luck of the draw to determine the card with the most to gain. IMO a Golden 290 will beat a Golden 780 under water.

That's why I got myself a 290, just have yet to try it yet. Need to get a waterblock for it, but will test on air first.

70% fan speed (sure, not exactly quiet but not as loud as people think) nets me 1150 core and 1600 mem with temps in check under 80*c.. They can overclock decent enough. thumb.gif

Do you need nvidia/amd specific features like physx or mantle

What cooling solutions

Because really the performance is so close it won't make a difference unless you are using games that benefit from one or the others software specifically.

This. If it's BF4 - mantle seals the deal IMO

Someone needs to sig this ^ first part. But yeah getting people to realize brand loyalty is useless is apparently much harder than it seems. This is also what i was looking for so clock for clock Hawaii is stronger than the 780? (not the Ti). I have been absent sometime but was keeping watch when the GK110 vs Hawaii thread started.

That's my dilemma the 780s OC ability vs the 290s.

Again does anyone know if that 700USD price tag for the 290x lightening is set in stone or inflated due to miners?

Hawaii is stronger clock for clock but clocks lower

290x will never be "value", like i've said a few times it's only ~3-4% better than 290 clock for clock (tested on OCN) and costs often 30% more. Lightning is just an extreme case - you're paying more for a card that's only a little better, most useful to benchers and extreme oc-ers, not really those looking for value and >95% of the performance

When is the 290 set to go down again? As far as 290s to look at the Tri-X and vapor X seem to be the best aftermarkets?

The other consideration for me is heat. My 800D doesn't contain much airflow, so GK110 might benefit in this area as well.

http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/sapphire_radeon_r9_290_vapor_x_launches.html

The 290 Vapor X is looking pretty impressive for a factory OC 1030/1400 would give some pretty decent performance numbers. Does the exhaust on the Vapor series exhaust into the case or out the back? Same question for the 780 Classy?

There is another thought in the back of my head about Batman Arkham Knight which will be a TWIMTP title if history serves as a precedent.

The more powerful coolers exhaust into case usually, open air is better absolute performance than blower

gk110 and hawaii both use like 300w with oc anyway

I see. I always figured a blower given my situation of less airflow would be more preferred.

Some coolers exhaust most of their heat out of the actual exhaust that goes to the outside of the case:

Given the choice between a sapphire Vapor-X/Tri-X (assuming they're similar price) and a 780 Classy or Lightening which would you choose?

Depends on game and which tech you want (mantle support now for bf4 and maybe a few other games, or stuff like nvenc etc)

balance is tipped a little bit in favor of nvidia for 1080p, radeon for 1440

See the bottom of this page.

Need to see heat buildup inside of a closed case though, it's still not like a blower which is sealed off from the case

w/ 300w, there'll be heat in the case, it's only a question of how much

Well i'm at 1080p, BF4 i don't care about anymore at all, game has become redundant and boring for me. Battlefront 3 i might be looking into if it is good. I wont be jumping on the bandwagon like i did with BF. Titanfall, Batman Arkham Origins(currently playing these), Batman Arkham Knight, The Witcher 3, The Division, and maybe Watch Dogs are what i'm looking forward to. Granted two of those we have no idea about performance but the other two are most likely TWIMTBP titles.
