It's probably something with the TIM application since it idles at 51'C. I'd crack it open and re-TIM it but I'm not sure how MSI is with that.

It could also be my case since the only outlet for all the hot air from the card + H80i is through the area ahead of the card (where the cables are tied):

Pretty sure MSI is one of the three dealers who don't void warranty even if they know you removed the stock cooler (the others are EVGA and XFX). Even so you can easily remove the stock heatsink and re-apply thermal paste as long as there is no clear "WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED" sticker that stops you from removing it and they can't tell that you ever removed it if you put it back correctly.

I re-applied thermal paste on my Tri-X (and Sapphire is apparently one of the worst when it comes to cooler removal on their warranty), and I recently had to send the card in for RMA for artifacting and black screens on loading windows and they replaced it no questions asked.

The air near the case as well as the case itself do get hot and toasty.. hence the recommendation for having enough ventilation for a 290. tongue.gif

My two previous Kepler cards (reference 780 Ti and 670 DirectCU II) put out nowhere near as much heat. The Asus even had a similar style cooler as my 290X.

GK110 cards do put out some heat, but Hawaii cards put out more for sure. It's not a big issue to be honest as long as the cooler can handle the heat output.

However, the main reason I bought my GTX 780 w/ reference cooling is because I didn't want the heat going through my H110 like it did on my Crossfire setup. It's a bonus that the cooler looks amazing and is very quiet too.

Pretty much. That's a pretty tight setup.

Although I suppose it could also depend on your fan profiles. Might not ramp up until a higher temp to keep things quiet. But yeah, that cooler is one of the better ones out there for sure.

That's something i'm concerned with as well. Which is one reason i love my 7970 reference blower. Sure it's loud but the heat is going out of the case and not affecting my Glacer 240L to an extent. That said the computer is on a desk in a corner so there isn't really much room to dissipate heat in the first place. When my 7970 was in thermaltake Armor i took it home and had a huge load Temp decrease, i assume from how easily heat was dissipated given where the computer was. I mean i went from 76C to 68C. Do you think it would be better to go reference 780 or Classy if looking at a case with limited airflow like an 800D?

Seeing the 290x lightening thread and how people are hitting 1200 on the core makes me anxious, also saw some reporting temps with overvoltage being around 61C which is incredible. Now if the price would come down or if they would make a 290 lightening. Which i really don't understand why they wont? A 290 lightening for 500-550$ would sell pretty well. One of my main reasons at the moment for wanting a 780 is the OCing potential compared to the 290/x. I know the 290s are stronger, but from what i understand 1200+ for a 780 Classy on air is pretty common. Where as 290/x OCs on air seem to be at the very best 1200, which seems to be almost a rarity.

Didn't crack the case open or change anything but the positioning. These cards are much more space heaters than Kepler is!

You should get a node! My case is like a little wind tunnel.

I just played through all of Cry3 and my Ti hovered around 70C with ~60% fan speed.

Sexy! <3

I'm making a white/black wind tunnel too with an air 540, just need to get new PSU in and order 4 more fans - got 3x af140 for rear and top with case, need a third ty-147 for silver arrow and 3x front intake 120mm's (fm121's?)

Ahhh, why would you invest in 290x over 290 for ~3% performance gain clock for clock, instead of buying a few fans and clocking 5% higher with your new cool GPU temps? wheee.gif

that looks great and many people complain about heat but don't understand that it varies from one case to the next thumb.gif
