Yes, that's why you avoid reference R9 290s. I've done extensive research on the R9 290s that are available, and there are some DAMN good options out there that will beat any GTX 780. Also, I'm not going to compare clock speeds because we are comparing two completely different GPUs. Clock-for-clock, they aren't going to be identical.
290 and 780 are trading blows, there's no definite winner. There was a lot of debate and benches on OCN nearer launch, and simple answer is at stock they perform very well. If you're cranking up gk110 though or especially adding voltage past 1.2v, there is no way you can consistently beat them with any cooled 290, and 780ti stands ahead of the pack (original titan, 780/290/290x)
