I just ordered the DirectCU II R9 290 for $489.99 shipped (from Amazon.com)!

I can hardly wait to experience Crysis 3 with this card! Of course, I am looking forward to experiencing Crysis 1 with it too (Crysis 2 is liquid-smooth on my system even with it completely maxed out). The other games that I have are older and are already liquid-smooth (probably 100 FPS and higher with extremely low frametimes).

Now, I know what you're thinking: the DirectCU II cooler that's on this card is the same one that is used on the GTX 780 (and therefore the two outer pipes don't touch the GPU) and the VRM temps are always way too high. First, the cooler seems to do just fine. Compare:

The DirectCU II R9 290's Thermal Dynamics (thermal performance): http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/asus-r9-290-direct-cu-ii-oc-review-1600p-ultra-hd-4k/28/

The MSI GAMING R9 290's Thermal Dynamics: http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/msi-r9-290-oc-gaming-edition-review-1600p-ultra-hd-4k/28/

Both had pretty much identical temps in Furmark, but the difference is that the DirectCU II R9 290 only needed the fan speed to be at 50% while the MSI Gaming R9 290 needed it at 64% That's a 14% higher fan speed to achieve the same temps! So yeah, the GTX 780's DirectCU II cooler seems to be just fine for the R9 290!

Now, onto the VRM temps. As you can see from the screenshot below (taken from the Thermal Dynamics page), it's not really an issue:

As you can see, it's just that the sensor is not in the correct spot, but ASUS assured KitGuru that the VRM’s are being cooled well within specifications. So, if I have any issues, the I'll just call (not e-mail or chat with) Amazon.com and say that I was sent a defective card. That way, I won't have to pay for return shipping. However, I'm not worried about it because I won't be overclocking.

So yeah, I'm pumped!

congrats...thumb.gif

Please post some VRAM temp result when you get your brand new card up and running.

I bought crysis 3 during Christmas but not be able to play it(sold my 7950 for $430+ a used 550ti), so I am looking to buy either a 290 or 780.

I am really looking forward your new card result to help making my decision. thumb.gif
