Hello
built recently a Silverstone GD08 PC (see thread on the GD08 owners thread)
now starting to figure out what kind of movies server to build

anyone has experience with such cases ?

any suggestions for components requirements/models ? Idea is to use the GD08 PC to run
movies from the media server via LAN connection.

Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 to access and set up the network ?
VLC to play ripped movies ?

also what about PLEX ? :

thank you
Ken

seems a good topic with photos and list of components...

I currently use Plex Media server with my FreeNAS box. I stream my movies over a LAN connection and it works really good. I can stream huge full HD 3D movies with no problem. Plus Plex also has a client that you can install on your HTPC to make browsing through your movies a breeze. It's based off of the XBMC interface.

I've used VLC to play over the network in the past but since using Plex I'll find it hard to use anything else. Especially now that it supports Chromecast. As CAHOP240 said, the Plex Home Theater program is very similar to XBMC and is a great dashboard for an HTPC.

I should also point out that with Plex you can stream your library to any iOS, Android or PC with an internet connection, assuming you have a decent upload bandwidth

thanks for the inputs !

do I see it correctly:

softwares:

on the media server: install as OS, Windows media server 2011

on the htpc: add PLEX to play movies, make your own movies library. I also installed AURORA.

hardware for the server ( my thinking):

case: rackmountable case 4U, use a 3.5 to 2.5 bay converter for the SSD boot disk

I like the look of the 1U-2U cases but noise level is an issue I suppose ( small fans at high speeds)
and no temperature-controled room

HDD : bulletproof WD RE enterprise HDD 2-4T ?
WD RE 2 TB Enterprise Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, 7200 RPM, SATA III, 64 MB Cache - WD2000FYYZ

MB: ATX (Intel, ASROCK ?) making sure is has GB LAN

CPU: INTEL I-CORE3 3240

5.25 floppy: ASUS

OS-boot drive: INTEL SDD 240GB

MEMORY: 2*4 ddr3 RAMS

RAID CONTROLLER: SAS9211-8I 8PORT Int 6GB Sata+sas Pcie 2.0
+extra fan if needed depends on what type of server case will be used.

option:
TP-LINK TG-3468 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit PCI Express Network Adapter

PSU: CMASTER V1000 GOLD

FANS: perhaps replace stock models with better ones from COOL MASTER or SILVERSTONE
