AMD Phenom x3 8450 Overclocking problem! HELP!

So... yeah, that's my first time to post anything anywhere biggrin.gif Okay, im new to the overclocking, but i know the basics. My mainboard is ASRock A790GMH/128M (at least thats what CPU-Z says). 4 GB RAM, and the cpu - AMD Phenom Triple-core 8450 2.1GhZ. I somehow managed to overclock it a bit in the past to 2.4. In the BIOS it says that i can overclock to 4.4Ghz . So, i got into the BIOS, went to Advanced, CPU Management. So, from there i changed the old frequency to 226 and it became 2.4. After 3 weeks (yesterday) I changed the frequency to 400 (a professional was next to me) and at the top-right of the screen it says 150-500 (500 is the maximum freq. i can use), but when i started CPU-Z it says that my CPU is at 2.10 :/

Overclock failed. Simple as that.

You cant go making jumps like this, everything is going to be gradual in small steps with lots of failure along the way. The failures are going to be a part of the troubleshooting process until you reach your chips limits.

I suggest you kick it up a notch every once in a while, and when you have problems you can bring them here.

You can't go set 400 FSB on an AMD board and come in here like " why its not works good? " with your cute little cat avatar.

This site, and overclocking in general are not going to work that way.

TBH, the most you'll get out of a toliman will be like...3.2ghz if you are lucky.

Woah... 3.2 is even TOO MUCH! i would like something about 2.5, 3.0 max. tongue.gif So you say that i should just make it from 200 to 202, after 1-2 day 205, 206, 207, 209 etc.? btw Thank you for the help!thumb.gif

You said you've already had it at 226 right. So start there and increase by 1-2 at a time. If it becomes unstable add some V_Core to it in bios. Keep an eye on your temps though , I have a 9850 and it's one hot liitle beasty.

3.2 would be a really nice old chip.

but yes, The every few dys is so you know it is working with all of your daily application usage.

By setting the reference clock to 400, you tried to overclock the chip to 4.2 GHz. The system couldn't even POST at such a ridiculous overclock. It didn't have the voltage needed to initiate at such a speed, even if it were capable of running at it, which it isn't. In order to boot the system, the BIOS defaulted everything back to stock settings.

A Toliman isn't capable of running anywhere near that fast. It's a 65nm chip, and yours, being an X3, likely had faults in the silicon to begin with, otherwise AMD would have sold it as an X4. Most of those chips can make it to 2.5-2.6, and some can make 3.0 if you're lucky, have a good motherboard, and can keep it cool. But there's no way you're getting to 4.2.

Thanks for all the replies smile.gif I managed to get it back to 2.40, but i havent actually increased it much from then (it was the same day of this post). Now im gonna try to make it higher, but i think i wont be able. BTW What is V-Core though? I mean... is it an option in the BIOS? Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I HAVE TO KNOW biggrin.gif

Core voltage, CPU voltage whatever it's called in your bios. Main voltage for the processor.
