I see - so the problem was more to do with constant changes of people in charge of the buy, the flood and 'FTW PC' - surely with a well put together model (outside of OCnet) a group buy could be done? I order from China/Japan all the time and it's easy, as long as you plan strategy. It seems in that group buy that people just saw '$13' for a GT and got happy in the pants, causing the whole thing to fall apart...

A recent group buy for the GT AP-45s had them at $13 if I remember correctly. That was directly from Nidec Servo, so let's assume swiftech could get them for $8 a fan. Then we add $4 per fan so they can make a profit. Then we factor in shipping to to their warehouses, then from their warehouses to all the resellers, let's say 50cents per fan as bulk freight shipping isn't much for such small items per unit. Now we're looking at around $20 MSRP with a somewhat limited profit margin. Swiftech's current price for their helix is around $10 MSRP so direct buy is around $5, so production from them would be very cheap. Swiftech doesn't care about how much money their competition is getting as long as their income is sufficient, cutting their own production of their fan to sell a different one may very well decrease their profit. They have all their money already spent on facilities to produce their own fans. They'd have to scrub all that investment.

This brings me back to my point: More than likely it will be a company who doesn't have their own high end fan like XSPC, Aquacomputer, HW Labs, or someone like that. (EK has their own high end fan in the works from what I understand.)

Why do you think Swiftech would stop making the Helix if they took on the GT?
They already are making the Helix to compete with the GT.
Just because they were to take on the GT would allow them to offer both the GT and the Helix to their resellers.
Their is obviously a profit to be make with the Helix or they wouldn't make them.
So harversting the market for both the GT and the Helix only makes good business sence.

Allowing soneone else to reap the GT profits does not.

I just don't see it happening, maybe it will though.

id bet they do the same thing that scythe did with nidec, they could just switch and get everyone to buy their fans.
own both fans, sell both, cheaper and more expensive models, then you get both the people that want the best and the people that want the best bang for buck.

and i wouldnt really call the helix "high end" its like 12$ a fan.
i have no idea who makes the Helix. But that's not relevent.
Swiftech distributes the helix and makes a profit from it.
Allowing somrone else to distribute the GT to compete against Swiftech makes no sense at all.
Obviously, their is a market for both fans,
No reason why one would not want to reap the profit frpm the sale of both fans.

MSRP is $9.99 means manu price is about half that, so $5 direct buy.

Swiftech has their own manu plants in China*. With such a low direct buy price there's no way they're made by a third party, or you'd see them at least 30% more expensive.

I joined the buy group early. At that time, they were 9$ for the barebone and 11$ for the complet fan. The only difference was that the complet fan has the 3-pin connector installed.

The flood was not a big deal. Natural disasters happen all the time. I think most of the members understood that.
The worst part had to be FTW PC outright lying to the group and procrastinating.
He would claim for example that he had the fans in his possession, while Jim at Caselabs was storing them in his warehouse cross country from FTW PC.

I got my fans almost 7-8 months after FTW PC would announce "last few orders will be sent today". The list goes on......
I think FTW PC is out of business now. Nobody trust them anyway. They got kicked out of OCN as a vendor.

It was mainly because it is not gonna be produced again being that it was a rare model and such.
It did leave a very bad taste on everyone (Including me) who joined the MO. It was due to miscommunication and after that mismanagement after that. It was just a utter facepalm.

Lol that's not a bad synopsis of the timeline, but geek excitement wasn't the cause of it falling apart. It was the interaction and amplifying effect of many things going wrong one after another that made it such a fiasco. If the floods in Thailand hadn't shut down the factories for nine months (or however long it was), the order might have been delivered well before the FTW guy moved across country and made us all suffer through his personal/professional melt down. It was a combination of bad luck, bad timing, and misplaced trust in the shipping vendor. And it does seem that OCN figured that even if things had gone well it was still too much of a headache to manage.

It certainly could have gone better with a bit more oversight and planning, but all told, the fact that OCN were the official seller was crucially important in the end because they did eventually step up and refund people who got screwed. I would be leery of buying into another group purchase without a similarly trusted entity acting as the backstop for when things go wrong.
