[Build Log] Who's a Fanboy? - Page 4

I hear you on the budget! Officially scrapped my custom loop because I'm gonna be applying to the Ohio State grad program and we're gonna be flying 3 dogs from Hawaii! Build looks awesome! crappy about the fan controller. Ebay has good deals on remote controlled RGB LED strips that are dimmable. They come from China but I havent had any burn out yet. Just a lil bit of solder and they work .awesome.

Build looks great brotha. I like the way the Recon looks where you mounted it.

There's a chance the fan channel's overloaded if your controller's acting like that. With analog fan controllers, when you reach the channels limit, it raises all the fans to 100% so it doesn't have to work as hard. Fan controllers actually generate more heat and use more energy when you lower rpm's

Also, there's no such thing as a white uv strip. A white cathode would light up your rig real nice, and MAY have some uv properties to it, but your rig will be lit up.

As far as LED's, UV Cathodes are something like 20x (or more, can't remember) more UV reactive than UV LED's. UV LED's don't give anywhere near the same effect that cathodes do. Maybe find a way to keep the cathodes out of site better if you want less of the blue glow to be visibe.

Oh, I didn't want UV LEDs. I just wanted the cathodes to light up the tubing, and the the LEDs to give the inside the color I want, obviously with a diminished UV effect, but without the purple. redface.gif

Either way, Newegg accepted my RMA and even emailed me a shipping label. Apparently their customer service is quite good when going through eBay. rolleyes.gif

I might just give up the thought of UV tubing all together, it looks pretty dang good without the UV effect, but with the UV effect, it puts it over the top. I just wish I could get away with having the cathodes like I do. I need higher powered cathodes that I can place elsewhere and it not be purple. I guess I'm asking a bit too much. tongue.gif

Right now all the fans are either on molex to 3 pin or on the motherboard with the 7v adapters included with the fans. Once I get the money back from the Recon, I'll either look into another solution or just deal with 7v. 7v is fine and all, and is much, much quieter than my AP15s at full blast, (even with the top rad in P/P) but I still want full control over my fans so if I want it to go lower or full blast for benching, I can. I just like having my options open.

I'll take a look at those lights when I get a chance. thumb.gif Sucks about the loop. =/ Congrats on the grad program though!

EDIT: Oh! and I also entered in the MOTM for April. Doubt I'll win or even get second place, but it'd be awesome if you guys could support me! biggrin.gif

You shouldn't need that many cathodes for UV effect. You should be able to conceal 1 or maybe 2 where they aren't really visible and have everything UV reactive inside your rig glow. Especially with UV tubing and/or coolant in a single compartment.

I've never seen some1 put so many cathodes in one place like that lol. Have you played around with it? Tried with just one or 2? That one hidden on the bottom and maybe one hidden in the corner of your windowed side panel should bling that whole chassis out.

^^That's the RGB Strip i have. $16 bux w free shipping. Obviously that's USA, but just as an example.

I'd definitely go with Amazon or Ebay for LED strips. Search "SMD 5050 300". 5050 is the type of circuit, 300 means its a 5 meter strip with 60 led's per meter. Make sure you get one with a molex/dc adapter. Kits are cheap with remotes and everything

I have played around with it, but with how much gear I have in this case it was necessary, otherwise half the tubing was glowing properly. I could remove the one between the graphics cards, because that one isn't necessary, but I literally have no room to put the other one anywhere else. My top radiator is literally 2-3mm from my VRM heatsink and with it in P/P is actually hanging over the memory sockets. That's why I want higher powered UV lighting. Something that I can hide and not have to compensate for with the one that isn't hidden at all. Something that is flexible so I could route it around the side panel and remain hidden would be awesome, but that would require me to use LEDs and not Cathodes. =/

I've seen that RGB strip before, but I didn't know that you could dim it. That'll definitely be one my my next aesthetic upgrades, but first I have to figure out my UV problem.

UV Cathodes are the highest power UV lighting that i know of for PC's. Unless you wanna grow some Ganja in your rig too :p

What brand cathodes do you have, and are they new? Cathodes burn out fairly quick, and some brands are better than others. That's why led's are so popular. It's just not possible for led's to replicate UV light anywhere close to cathodes.

All LED's that i know of are dimmable. Alot of led strips can be dimmed with a fan controller as long as it's a 12v DC strip and you keep the amps within the fan headers spec.

For RGB you need the remote because there's either 3 +V's or 3 Grounds.

You couldn't tuck away a cathode in the left corner of the windowed panel in that pic?

Also, there's a reason they're called "Black" lights. It looks like every light in the room is on in that pic :D

I thought of an idea when right before I went to sleep that I'm going to be trying later. I've got a little bit of space behind the front radiator where the mobo tray is, I might be able to squeeze both of the cathodes behind there. I've just got to figure out a way to do that without removing my radiators, graphics cards, and tubing to do it. tongue.gif Which will be a feat. I need to take more pictures just so you guys actually have an idea of how tight things actually are in here. The copper stop fitting of my 240 is almost touching the fins of my 360, like I said before the the 240 is barely hover a few mm above my VRM heatsink. I have to remove basically my whole loop to do any maintenance. I actually hooked up all available sata connections just so I wouldn't have to remove my loop if I decided to add another HDD in the future.

Lol, i know exactly how tight it is in there. I'm doing a HAF XB build :p

Why do u think i'm going crazy with the mods? Wanna fit as much as possible

Yeah. You understand, but most others probably don't. tongue.gif It sucks having no room to work whatsoever, but that's also the fun of it. wink.gif

It took 11 days but Bitfenix Support finally responded to me about the Bitfenix Recon. Basically told them that is a piss poor job for CS and that I already contacted the reseller for a refund and that I won't be buying your products every again.

Oh! and I accidently ran 1.745v through my 3930k and caused it to degrade. I bought another 3930k, seems to overclock as well as the old one did, but this one takes better to not using BCLK strap of 125 with a BCLK of 122.5. It actually lets me just move the multi and boots into windows with 1.45v and 5 giggles. Haven't done that much testing on it, but it's almost stable with 1.45 and 4.9ghz. I'll probably move to a lower clock for daily stuff though.

It even benched at 5.1ghz with 1.5v. I couldn't really test it all that much since my DMM is messed up. It was showing 1.7v when I was booting so I reset the CMOS and it showed 1.45v with stock settings. I plugged it into my GPU and it was showing 1.26v, so I knew it was messed up because my GPUs obviously can't be that high at stock settings. tongue.gif Have to use an EVBot or the Classy controller to get voltages like that.

Hopefully this next paycheck is nice and I can get a new DMM and a few other things.

As far as updates to the aesthetic look on my rig... I haven't even attempted to move the UV Cathodes. I plan on doing that semi-soon, but I've been so busy with this semester, I haven't been able to do anything to my rig. I've also been "baby sitting" my wife because she had teeth removed today and is high as a kite. If you want to see a video of it PM me. It's got some NSFW language in it. tongue.gif
