Can't change desktop background (less braindead then you think)...

Hey guys

For a while I set my desktop background to be a slideshow of various non stock images that would cycle through a folder and change roughly every 15 seconds. I noticed that sometimes when my computer was on for extended periods of time, I would have to reset this option or otherwise restart my computer in order bring the slideshow function back (as opposed to just staying as one static image).

Maybe a year and a half ago now, my background became stuck on one image and I haven't been able to get it to change to anything since. I'm no longer concerned with returning to the slideshow, but I literally can't do anything to change my desktop. I'll select a different picture in the personalization menu and hit save changes, but nothing will happen. A few months ago, I even deleted the picture in question from my computer, but it's still somehow my desktop background.

Obviously this isn't an emergency situation by any means, but I'm getting ready to switch over to an SSD currently so I thought it may be good to do something about this before bringing it over to the new drive.

Thanks

You say the regular stuff under "Personalize" doesn't work.

So:

How to Disable or Enable (Turn Off or On) Windows SideShow in Windows 7 or Vista

And, to answer your next question:
To Open Local Group Policy Editor.
Start > Run > enter gpedit.msc to start searching applications.
Click the found result to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
Hint:Left pane in Computer Configuration

Hard to find, but it's there

Thanks for that and the extra instructions, but I suppose I should have mentioned that the sideshow function hasn't been working for the past 1.5 years. I followed all the steps listed and then tried to change the wallpaper to something else and nothing changed. It's still just the same one picture that is stuck there.

What folder does Slideshow point to to get the pictures?
And are the pictures you want to use for Slideshow there?

Click Start, paste the following text into the search box, and then press Enter

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\

Right-click the TranscodedWallpaper.jpg file, and then click Rename.

Change the file name to TranscodedWallpaper.old, and then click Yes when you are prompted.

If slideshow.ini is listed, double-click this file. Slideshow.ini should open in Notepad. Select all the text in slideshow.ini if any exists, and then press Delete on the keyboard.

On the File menu, click Save.

Close Notepad.

Close the Windows Explorer window, and then browse to the picture that will be set as the background image.

Try to apply a background picture again.

Yes! Thank you!

I actually just went there and changed the file name and wasn't prompted with any yes or no pop up. For kicks I went back to change the background image the normal way and it worked! I feel like I'm scratching a two year old itch, thanks again!

And just for extra information, I turned off the side show option months ago. I was just trying to get a different static picture as my background, which I couldn't do until today. Very happy biggrin.gif

No worries. Happened to me when my wife saved an embarrassing picture as my background on my laptop. Glad it's sorted now.

I do this to people at work that leave their pc unlocked via group policy. I know exactly where it is for future reference

One is user config/admin templates//control panel/personalization

The other is one that forces a specific image under
Admin templates/desktop/desktop

In your case you probably needed to just edit the registry to get it to work again.
