Steelseries Kana vs Kana v2 [+mini review] And LOD FIX

EDIT: After using the kana v2 for a few months, then going back to the kana v1, i really felt the smoothing on the kana v2's sensor, and decided to go back to my v1.. so if you are a casual gamer then i still recommend the kana v2 for you, but if you play competitive games and want to get better then i recommend the fk1, the g402 or g502, the g100s, the roccat kone pure military.

I finally got my hands on a Kana v2 and i thought i'd do a comparasion with it's older brother.
I'm not as good as some of the other people here interms of writing skills and such.. I'm a csgo enthusiast though, and the mouse is the most important peripheral in that game, so i hope this makes up for that.

I've been using the Kana v1 for about 1.5 years now, and i was mostly happy with it, but it had a some flaws:

  • Scroll wheel sometimes bugs and activates on it's own, causing me to jump in cs (doesn't happen that often).
  • Mouse 1 and 2 are stiff and aren't easy to tap rapidly (when using a pistol for example), also there's a bug where the button lets go on it's own, i think it's due to the mouse's age, but it caused me a few problems in game when i was cooking a nade and trying to aim it somewhere and the mouse just lets go of the hold, throwing the nade at my teammates.
  • The LOD on the sensor is ridiculous.. had to keep testing different tapes and different tape positions to make it perfect, but it's good after that.
  • The sensor has minor angle snapping, not as bad as the mx510 but it's there.
  • The feet that came out of the box were utter garbage, so i had to order some good tephlon feet from ebay and those did the trick.
  • The wire is very stiff, and affects my aim ingame because i have to drag it around. So I had to tape it to the side of my monitor to fix this issue. (I didn't have this problem with the DA that i had before)
  • The whole surface of the mouse is a fingerprint magnet, also it feels a bit sticky.

But i loved the size/shape/weight of it, so i was planning to get the v2 as soon as i heard about it..

Now to the pros/cons of the Kana v2!

It solved some of the problems with the old mouse:
  • The new Omron switches are much better than the old TTC ones, less stiff and easier to tap rapidly
  • The 3090 doesn't have any angle snapping, so that's great.
  • The v2's top surface is miles better than the old one, it's really smooth and nice, and it fixed the fingerprints issue.

but some are issues still there (although they can be fixed using man's best friend: tape)
  • The LOD is still really high (about 4 cds).. so i had to use the tape trick again, and it worked perfectly here too (1cd lod now)
  • The feet that came with it are bad, had to install some teflon feet again, good thing the ones from my old kana work here (they didn't change the position/size)
  • The wire is a bit stiff, so i stuck it on the side of my monitor again, and it's good now.
  • minor thing, but I think the black side buttons of the old kana look better than the orange ones they have on the v2, but that's personal preference i guess.

Overall it's good so far:
  • No acceleration at all (tested it by flicking from the right edge of my mouse pad to the left edge and getting to the same position ingame always)
  • tracks really well at 800/400 dpi.
  • The shape/weight is so great for me. It's so easy to lift and re-position it.

hope this was useful for anyone who wants to upgrade from the old kana, and is considering the v2.

If anyone has any questions i'd be happy to answer them..

Note: I had to do a "Driver Reinstall" in the Steelseries "Firmware update tool" to get the Steelseries engine to recognize the mouse, but after everything worked great

How To Fix The LOD

Impressions after 1 week of usage

Hey guys i just wanted to do a small follow up to the review after using the mouse for a month:

Pros:
  • Great tracking.
  • Good Mouse1 and Mouse2 (<3 omron switches)
  • Best shape I've ever used.
  • love the texture of the top and side, really smooth but doesn't slip.
  • Really lightweight and easy to move/reposition.
  • No more Scroll Wheel jump bug!

Cons:
  • LOD without the tape trick is freaking high (4cds+), you have to use tape trick if you're going to get it. [fixable]
  • Feet that came with the mouse are not the best. I recommend that you buy third party teflon feet. [fixable]
  • The side buttons are harder to press than on the v1.. would've liked if they were a bit softer, but they can't be misclicked easily so that's a good thing. (I got used to it after a while)
  • The max tracking speed is a bit less than the kana v1's, it's pretty high though, and it never affects me in-game.

Nice input. For Kana v1 lovers, the Kana v2 should feel right at home. The cord should be feel slightly looser on the v2 than the v1.

The Kana v2 sides are horrible however.
The grip is among the worst in any mouse ever, on pair with Deathadder Black edition.

It was 100% impossible for me to use it since I had zero grip on the sides.

But remembered I had a glossy kana v1, I hate glossy top but the sides were MUCH better on v1. So mixed it and now It is a good mouse.

@dstrk picture added to the Main post! sorry i forgot to post it before.

@takasa <3 your reviews man smile.gif yes this mouse a great upgrade in everyway! highly recommended.

@Nivity: hh yeah mate i saw this in the takasa review thread! looks Really nice. gj.

I guess it's personal preference, but i really like the side material here, and i play really low sens so i have to keep lifting the mouse.

ah a small question! will it be possible to change the side buttons color from orange to black by replacing the kana v2's side buttons with the black ones from the v1??

i never opened up a mouse before but i'll do it if it's possible smile.gif

i have to confess, i have been switching mice a lot over the past few weeks and i settled on using the v2. playing a LOT of Diablo 3 at the moment, and i was getting cramps with botht he avior and the rival, but i can play for 16 hours with the kana v2 and still be fine smile.gif

yes i use a hybrid between a claw and a palm grip: (bottom of palm on the mousepad, top of palm where fingers start on the mouse's top, index/middle fingers laying almost flat, ring and pinky on the right side of the mouse), and the kana's shape is the most comfy for me out of all the mice I've used.
