[ds] Final Fantasy XIV PS4 Ver. Lets You Choose 1080p and 720p Native Resolution

That’s definitely an useful option for a MMORPG like Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, that runs with unlocked frame rate (capped at 60 as the upper limit). In normal conditions it runs butter-smooth, but MMORPGs can have situation in which over a hundred highly detailed characters are displayed together on screen, which bogs the frame rate down even on most gaming PCs.
That’s why Square Enix allowed us to choose. Want the best detail but a bit less performance when you’re killing Odin (that notoriously attracts hundreds of players)? Run the game in full HD. Do you want better frame rates in very crowded conditions? Take a visual hit and select 720p as native resolution.

this is good news for gamers and might be bad news for devs if fans demanded it

I think that's a bad idea. The 30 FPS cap option Killzone and Infamous use are far nicer as they still achieve 1080p resolution.

I agree. It stealthily concedes that the game is not optimised for the hardware or the hardware is too weak.

Why not have a lower detail setting ?.. because its a true reflection of the game engine or machine not having enough power.

I think people being 'forced', if you could say that, to enable a lower quality graphics option because the developers couldn't achieve a fluid experience because of their incompetence is unfair.

There can't be a solid 30th cap in infamous, as I've noticed the fps increase to near 60 (eyeballing it) when not rendering much on screen. Same as in infamous 1 and 2 for ps3. However, I've definitely noticed 30 fps like moments. Maybe it's a dynamic v sync like kind of option.

They are adding the option soon to allow you to lock the game at 30fps so that the frame rate is more solid. Right now the game uses an unlocked frame rate which varies between 30 and 60fps.

Isn't 60fps better sometimes than never? It doesn't seem too disruptive to me tbh

All the GIF does is prove that there really isn't a major difference between 720p and 1080p. Sure you can see some difference, it looks a little sharper at 1080p without a doubt, but the difference is really miniscule taking into account arguments over resolution between fanboys of rival consoles.

I guess die hards will argue to death over anything.

How long has it actually been, that you had your eyes measured and tested if they still have 100% good vision axesmiley.png

How long has it been since you did? I find it hard to believe someone who would try and ridicule someone over their eyesight would miss out specific statements such as this...

My point remains the same. Factor in that consoles gamers generally sit a five to six feet away from a TV, unlike PC gamers who sit a foot or two away from a monitor, as well as specific upscaling tools in the consoles, the difference really isn't as big as people would make it out to be.

People act like the difference is suddenly going to change how the game looks on a radical scale when the reality is the difference, while there is one, is not really that great. All it does is make the image look sharper.
