I have a asus xonar dx sound card and I have the asus z87 rog hero that has supreme fx onboard audio and built in headphone amp . I want to get the astro a40 do I need to buy the astro mix amp ? or should I just get the headset ? I am going to use the headset for my pc only . also can you suggest another headset around the $200 price range ?

The whole point of mixamp is basically the Dolby Headphone support for all the game consoles. For PC use... I don't really see any kind of use for it as it even requires Dolby Digital output from the PC. And your Xonar DX already has Dolby Headphones.

In a nutshell: No, I would never recommend mixamp for PC.
What I would recommend is an external headphone amplifier for the Xonar DX.
