E6750 CPU usage / Upgrade

Thread Starter

I have a E6750 with 4GB of DDR2 600MHz that I use to run a minecraft server (few people, less than 10) and a TeamSpeak 3 server. I use the build in Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) to do some management on the computer. What happen is when we are more than 2 peoples on the server, we start lagging. When I look on the computer, using RDC, I saw the CPU usage drop from 80% to 20% (with no one on the server). It always happen. It look like a program is running only when I'm not log in. I have no idea what it could be since it is running a fresh Windows 7 Pro installation. I only have install the driver and what I need for minecraft (aka Java). I have try to scan for a virus (with malwarebyte), check the registry with CCleaner and look if they have thing I could uninstall. Found almost nothing and the problem is still here. I can't have physically access to the server right now.

Someone have an idea? I really don't know what is happening.

Also, I'm thinking about to build a small computer if I found that the E6750 isn't powerful enough for minecraft. It could have a double functionality, server + HTPC for my parents. Here is what I was thinking about :

CPU : i3-4330

Mobo : Asus H81I-Plus

Ram L: Crucial Ballistix 8GB DDR3 1600 (single stick)

Case : Silverstone ML06B (for the HTPC side)

PSU : Silverstone ST45SF-G 450W (to fit in the case)

SSD : Crucial M4 64GB (Already own, in the server right now)

CPU cooler : Zalman CNPS8900

OS : Win7 Pro OR Debian 7

Total : 600$

I would like to have in input on the build and an answer about my problem. I would like to not upgrade. I don't really like to spend money for something I don't really need, considering that I have got the computer free.

I have the same CPU running my minecraft server and TS3 server with no problems.

I run FTB mod packs.

I was running a Unleashed server that saw 10 people all the time and we never really experienced lag. Every once in a while maybe a hiccup, but never game ending lag. we all had quarry's, jet packs, and chunk loaders going and never had a problem. This was all running off a 7200rpm hdd and 4gb or ram, 2gb was allocated to MC. It would run for 3 days straight before I would restart it.

Now the Monster mod pack is out I did something a little different. I installed 2gb more ram and run the server on a ramdisk. This puts more load on the cpu than normal and at first I had the "cant keep up" message but MCPC+ fixed that. I have had up to 6 players so far and everything is good. But! It was not good at first. People where dropping out and experiencing lots of lag when near the rainbow forest (several hundred NPC’s). I installed MCPC+, that fixed all my lag problems and allowed me to install plugins. I restart it once a day to keep it fresh.

This is all on modded minecraft, I'm not sure how well the vanilla minecraft server runs as I have never played it.

I use Team Viewer to remotely access my server.

My server has Win7 + drivers, Dataram Ramdisk, TS3 server, Java 64 bit, minecraft server, Team Viewer, and that's it. no AV or Malware protection, nothing else. It runs our servers great.

Hope this helps a little!

Edit: What kind of internet connection do you have? Is it lan only? I'm running on cable with 50mbps down and 12mbps up and have hosted up to 10-12 players lag free.

Also are you running a modded server or vanilla?

Thread Starter

I'm running a Vanilla server since I found it to be more simple and we like to play it without mods, so I didn't need the have a bukkit server. I use a 64GB Crucial M4 SSD for the hard drive, it should become from here :P. My internet connection isn't the best. It is a 20Mbits Down and I think 10MBits up. Look like that :

The big problem, I believe is here. When I log on the computer (while the task manager is open) I saw that :

Still need to find what eat my CPU usage. I have Win7 + Driver + Realtemp and stuff like that install + Java and Minecraft + TS3.

Thanks for the reply. I saw your thread the other day :P

Is this the first time you have run a minecraft server on this tower? Or did this problem just appear after you updated it?

Here is a thread about 1.7.4 problems and some suggested fixes.
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2192119-174-is-slow/

Also, are you running a .exe or a .jar?

I tried the .exe on my main computer and it had lag, I could not host and play MC on the same system without lag and shuttering. So I downloaded the .jar and created a .bat, allocated more ram and that fixed all my issues. I was then able to host and play on the same tower with no problems.

When going over to the dedicated tower I simply copied the server over and it ran with no issues.

Last night I had 4 people on my server building and one exploring and cpu was right around 20-30% so the cpu should not be your problem.

I would download the .jar and create a .bat file if you have not tried it already.

Edit:

Question. That task manager screen, did you quit out of minecraft and log into the server, or did you have MC still connected? What changed between when you logged onto RDC?

Maybe ditch the Remote Desktop Connection and give Team Viewer 9 a try, maybe RDC is eating up cpu somehow when not connected?

It was running fine before I reinstall windows and update the server.
I will look for the fixes when I got back home.
I have always run from the .jar with a bat file to allow 2gb.
For the task manager. No one on minecraft and on TS. I dont think RDC eat something when it is close since it close the session. Maybe thats the problem.

Thanks for your helps.

Lee

Edit :

Hmm : Viewdistance from 16 to 15 look like to help alot! Will still need to test with more than one people on the server but we are in an exam week, next week maybe.
Switch to TeamViewer 9 but I didn't think that was the problem (Maybe because the session close everytime I log off.... will see)

Couple notes on the parts for the new build if you end up going that route.

The i3-4330 is a 4th gen Haswell using a LGA1150 socket but the ASUS H61 Motherboard is a LGA1155 (if I remember the series number correctly). Swapping to something like a ASRock B85M should handle the basics pretty well.

I usually try to use server grade parts for any build that will act as a file or web server of any kind. Depending on your budget you might want to consider parts that are a bit more robust and designed for 24 hours operation.

what hard drive and i really dont think you have enough ram for the mine craft side.

when i ran a mine craft server i had 8 gig and it was glitching upgraded to 16 and was a lot better.

speed is alright for a 10 man server teamspeak uses almost no bandwidth

Oups, I mean the H81, not the 61... typo :P. I don't have the budget for server grade part. Also, I was thinking to go on ebay to find part. The rig that run the server right now is my friend olg gaming computer that the 8800GTX had, I believe, suffer from overheat. He gave my the computer and I did a minecraft server for us (and few other friend).

I have change my mind for the motherboard, I was looking to that one : GIGABYTE GA-B85N-WIFI since it have wifi on it, I will save on the 20$ adapter.

I use a Crucial M4 64GB for the hard drive. I believe it is enough. I don't think the minecraft server, with less than 10 peoples, will have any issue with 2GB allow (via .bat file). But,  believe that the 600MHz hurt... I can't do anything for that, just need to tweek around!

I am shocked you are not using mstsc

from external remote you wil need to open the following port and forward it to and on your machine 3389

just make sure you have pro or better for rdp

I don't know what mstsc is but, from fast googling, it look like to be the remote desktop connection I was using...

Edit : Also, it look like when I quit a Remote Desktop Session, it close the session and it would be the culprit for mu CPU usage because, since I'm using TW9, I didn't see any high usage like before in the cpu usage! Looking good!!!
