New folder!

So, I've just started folding yesterday. I did a few WU's on my main rig using both CPU and GPU, but it turned my room into a sauna. It's a bit warm in the Aus at the moment. So I might hold off on that for a little bit.

But currently, I have my home server which is running an Intel XEON X3430 24/7 and I have a machine tucked away at work with an old Core2Duo running 24/7 because I don't pay the power. ;p

Any tips and hints are always appreciated.

First off, do you have a passkey and have it entered in all of the clients?

I'm assuming you installed the latest copy of v7, which is what's provided on the official FAH page. v7 by default runs at Medium level, which means it uses n-1 CPU threads and any GPUs only run on idle.

I'd recommend setting the Xeon server and C2D machine to Full, which uses all threads. The CPU core is pretty good about backing down if other tasks need CPU time, so having all of its threads folding shouldn't interfere with its server duties. If you do notice lag you can always drop it back to Medium. It sounds like the C2D machine doesn't do anything else, so I imagine you'd want it to be running full blast.

When it gets cooler, you may want to set your main rig to Full and then manually set the number of CPU threads to n-1 (open Advanced Control->Configure->Slots->Edit cpu slot); this will get the GPU folding all the time while still leaving a thread free to feed it. The GPU core is much more likely to cause lag than the CPU, so it's also very possible that you leave this machine on Medium so that the GPU only runs when it's idle.

Note that you can control individual slots by opening Advanced Control and right-clicking the slot.

I'm folding all 3 under the same username and passkey for OCN,

Yes, I am running the latest 7.4.4 I think it is? Server and C2D are set to full utilization and to work all the time. (the server is mostly for shared drive and just watching movies via PLEX, so CPU being maxed out doesn't hurt my other uses. And that XEON runs wonderfully cool and quiet)

I had my main rig going full all night because it was a very cool night last night. However, this morning my GPU isn't folding and in Advanced Control, it shows "FAILURE" and I can't seem to force it to fold again. Might just try a reboot and I'll let you's know if it doesn't solve it. tongue.gif

This will be my first full day of folding, and I'm at a registered 11,000 points. Not sure if that's any good as I have nothing to benchmark it against. But I'm going to keep pushing. biggrin.gif

Also, I just checked in advanced settings, and it's all pretty much set to auto. So I'm guessing it's using all the power it can when the slider is set to full and "Always on"

Yes, Full automatically tries to run as fast as everything can.

Regarding the GPU failure, is your card OC'ed? If it is, it may be OC'ed too much for FAH. FAH has a much lower tolerance for errors than benchmarks or games, as mis-rendering a pixel doesn't have nearly the consequences that mis-calculating part of a protein fold does.

I should point out that different GPU cores have different OC tolerances. Many people have found that they can't OC as far with core 17 WUs (projects 8900, 9401, 13000, 13001) as they can with core 15's (762x, 7660, 8018), and I think some people actually saw instability on core 17 at stock clocks. I've actually had the opposite experience, where I can push my cards higher on core 17 than core 15. Currently there's a mix of core 15 and core 17 work going around, so you may have been stable due to getting only one core's work and then last night you may have gotten work that uses the other core.

Can you check the logs and post what the project number was before the slot failed? If you've already rebooted, then old logs can be found in Start->All Programs->FAHClient->Data Directory->logs. The newest ones should be at the bottom.

Yeah it was an Overclock issue, I reset it and its been fine since.

Everything seems to be going really well. I've had my main on all day and night due to it cooling down here significantly.
Keeps showing an estimated PPD of 53,000ish. Is that what I should be expecting?

If that's 53k for both the CPU and GPU combined, I could see that. I'm guessing your CPU will do around 15k PPD and I could see 40k PPD on certain core 15 projects, specifically 7623/4/5/6/7, putting you in the range of the 53k you see. Projects 8018 and 7660 will probably be in the lower 20k's. On core 17 projects, which are currently just 13000 and 13001, you should be seeing around 85k PPD.

One thing I forgot to mention before is that the latest drivers aren't always the best for folding on GK104-based cards. Something changed between 327.23 and the 331.xx series that severely crippled core 17 folding performance on every 600 and 700 series card except the 780 (Ti) and Titan (Black). Like, a 70% loss in PPD crippled. Core 15 is unaffected. If you don't play any games that need or benefit from 331 or newer drivers you may want to roll back to either 327.23 or 326.80 (beta), as those are considered the best for GK104.
