AMD "X" cards

Thread Starter
Noob here, quick question.

I was trying to distinguish the difference between the R9 260/270/280/290 cards and their "X" versions. I know the X cards are better.

My question is how and why?

one of the differences is that the X cards are actually completely different than the Non X cards (except for the 270 i think)

the 280 is basically an HD 7950 and the 280X is an HD 7970. for the 290 series, the 290X has more stream processors than the 290

I dont really know whats up with the 270 since the 270X is an HD 7870, and the R7 265 is an HD 7850. I think the 270 is a cut down version or simply slower than the 270X but still faster than the R7 265

Depends on the card, really..

Combination of more shaders, higher clock speeds, higher memory speeds, different rops/tmu's, etc.

I could be wrong but for 270 and below the x difference is clock speed only and 280 up it's means more shaders or shaders plus clock.

So there is no universal difference? As in all the "X" cards have no specific feature or tech that the others don't?

I'm having a hard time deciding between 4 cards right now. GTX 760, GTX 770, R9 280, R9 280X

The 760 does seem to have a great price/performance ratio. But is the weakest. And both it and the 770 are limited to 2 GB VRAM. (4GB 770 is out of my price range, 4 GB 760 is pointless) The 3GB of VRAM that the 280's have is really appealing to me, as far as future proofing goes.

I think stock its:

280x > 770 > 280 => 760

And used to be overclocked it went:
280x > 770 > 280 > 760

Remember 280x = 7970 with higher clocks and 280 = 7950 with higher clocks and 770 = 680 with higher clcoks

If you cannot afford the 4gb 770 then for sure get a 280x... infact.. get the 280x anyways.. I just built a rig for a friend of mine who absolutely had to have nvidia in it.. and for his budget we got him a evga 770 classy 4gb and at the time I had a 7970 clocked to 1225/1700 (wich is a good overclock.. and remember 280x=7970 ghz edition.. and I bet most 7970's 280x's would hit around 1150-1200) and I handily beat his 770 classy in everything except tomb raider.. Also with the 3gb of ram you are mildly future proofing yourself as next gen console ports for pc will start using up alot more vga ram then we are used to seeing.
