[Neowin] The Eton Thundergod is just 9mm thick but it packs a giant 5000mAh battery

Taking the lessons of yesterday, the Chinese company Eton has decided to manufacture a smartphone that is 9mm thick-- just slightly thinner than the iPhone 4S-- yet it has a giant 5000mAh battery that the manufacturer claims will deliver a whopping 1100 hours standby (that's just short of 46 days for those who don't want to pull out their calculator).

The Eton "Thundergod" (or "Thor") is powered via the eight-core Mediatek MTK6592 chipset, clocked at either 1.7ghz or 2.0ghz. No details on what sort of display the Eton smartphone will have, however it will pack a Mali-450 GPU and a very reasonable 2 GB of RAM. Given that it has a Mediatek chipset however, it will most likely only run Android 4.2.

This is a large step up from Lenovo's large battery smartphone offering: the S860 that is due to be released in a couple of months is thicker than the Eton Thundergod and has 20% less battery life.

phone maker disagrees, general public/journalist disagrees, they will be complaining out how thick phone is for extra 3mm, and they will complain how heavy the phone is because of the extra 50g

Basically........ carrying a paper thin phone + a powerbank is lighter than fatter phone alone rolleyes.gif /s

thus is the market for shiny breakables that barely function because it couldnt last a few hours.

the only way for my phone to survive more then a few hours is to keep it on charge all the time and carry a battery case with a massive power bank and even with a battery case i'd be lucky to break 4 hours and that is considering a new phone with new battery with a new battery case.

sad times, i much prefer the size of phones 10 year back when they are actual brick sized

I can't forget my s3 a single night or else I ran out of juice. Kinda sick of it.. Battery tech is just not good enough and I'm happy to see this.

I don't see how that's uptime with that hardware is realistic without at least disabling everything crucial for its functionality.

I don't know what phone you have but that's horrible. My previous cheap Chinese Android phone was in use 3 years and that one only needed charging every 1.5 days.

I've been saying this but not sure how it'd be in reality. While they're trying to compete with who has the thinnest phone and taking it sometimes too far, a thick phone will feel unergonomic in your hand especially if it has a large screen.
