[build log] Antec P280 gets a makeover

My P280 has been a great case for the last 2 years or so. Plenty of room for air cooling or an AIO and provided enough space to do a small loop but the case was obviously not designed with water cooling in mind. I intend to fix that. Yes, i cold go spend ~$300 or so buy a 900d or something else that is already designed to accommodate larger loops and radiators but where's the fun in that? If I remember correctly i bought my P280 on sale for $100 so i feel i already gave a great case with very little invested; why not get the most out of that $100? Follow along with me and let's see what I can make out of this thing.

band.gif

My goal is to make room on the top panel to hold a 360mm radiator in a push/pull config and move my current 240mm radiator to the front of the case in a push/pull config which is currently being blocked by drive bays. I don't plan on keeping the 5.5 drive bays either. Time to get rid of those annoying things!

Drill baby drill!

Many rivets later

Mother board tray removed

I feel like a serial killer dismembering a body at this point

Now it's time to make room for that 360mm radiator on the top panel. Bust out the dremel.

Four dremel cutting wheels and a lot of sparks later

Now I'm going to make the new piece for the top panel out of acrylic/plexi whatever it is, I had it lying around and it's stiff as hell.

Ignore my math scribbles

Done measuring and I've cut my section away from the larger sheet

Gotta be careful drilling through this stuff. Got to slow down the bit just before it goes through to the other side

Hole saw time

Sanded and primed

Lets see how it fits

Not bad. After a little u channel molding, some modders mesh and paint it will look like it came from the factory that way.

Well that's all for tonight. I'll drill the holes to attach the acrylic to the top panel tomorrow and start sanding the case down in prep for a paint job. I'm still trying to decide If i want to go through the trouble of painting it white or sticking with a satin black look and what would be best for the build that will go inside this case when it's completed. Input would be appreciated.

Everything but the side panels are getting sanded and sprayed with primer tonight. I don't have a mask and this room isn't ventilated so I'm starting to get pretty high.

Sorry but I've been working ten hour days and it turns out covering a black case in white primer takes a long time and a whole lot of primer. The case is close to being ready to be put back together. Meanwhile I had a bunch of stuff I ordered arrived today so I got to work on some other aspects of the build while the clear coat dried on the case.

New today:
XSPC 360mm EX radiator
Primochill hardline compression fittings 1/2"
Primochill clear acrylic tubing 1/2"
Corsair SP120 high static pressure fans x 11
XSPC Photon D5 res/pump combo
XSPX Photon D5 aluminum mount ring
Mayhem X-1 oil black concentrate

What's old:
XSPC 240mm radiator
XSPC ray storm CPU block
XSPC GTX Titan/780/780ti block
Intel i5 4670k
PNY GTX 780
ASRock Z87 extreme 4 mobo
Corsair vengeance 16gb 1600mhz
Corsair RM750 watt PSU

Painting the Primochill fittings and the mobo heat sinks gold

Here they are dried and put back on the mobo

Got a few fans done tonight as well

Tomorrow night will be spent cutting a new mobo mount and doing some more fan painting.

Thanks for checking out my stuff.

Thanks man, I had no idea what I was getting into lol. I totally see why so many people abandon their mods. The only thing stopping me from riveting the case back together is that for some reason, the entire inner rear panel has a slight pink tint to it for some bizarre reason. Now I have to sand it down again and use a gray primer instead of white to cover whatever is causing that pink tint and then repainting and clear coating it all over again. Still have to cut a piece of plexi to make the new mobo tray/res mount which can't happen until the case gets the riveted and I can take measurements.

Fun stuffs smile.gif

Project is getting pushed back further. The inner rear panel is giving me a migraine. I sanded down the original white primer that had a pink tinge to it and washed the piece and left it to dry last night. Tonight, I sprayed it down with the grey primer and it immediately started to crinkle. I'm not getting good adhesion for whatever reason. Luckily the owner of a local car customizing shop owes me a favor and is going to sand blast it down to the bare metal for me. I'll be back with updates in a couple days.

I'm back with a small update. I recut a new shroud that the fans and radiator will attach too. Cut and painted my mesh and put on the u-channel molding.

Before and after shots of the top panel.

slowly but surely this project is coming together. i finally got around to cutting the new mobo tray and am drilling the mount holes right now. i had to drop the motherboard down farther towards the bottom of the case to make room for the push/pull config on the top panel. heres a shot i took while doing a quick check to make sure everything is going to fit right. nothing is bolted down and the clear piece of plexi that everything is sitting on will be painted white to match the case.
