Power supply going bad? - Page 2

I heard heard bad things about both Asus and Corsair RMA. And i am not even sure if your TX has 5 or 7 year warranty but if it has 5 years you are out of luck, how old is the motherboard?

From what I know tx series power supplies have 5 year warranty and the ax series have the 7 year warranty.

Motherboard was purchased in December. From what I've read, ASUS will just count this RMA as physical damage and not honor any warranty. I might try to clear out some of the melted plastic and see if the pins will still make a good connection, but I wouldn't know for sure without taking the plastic cover off (which I don't know how to do, haven't looked into it). I also read of some people getting an 8 pin socket from an old mobo and soldering it onto the new one, but I have no soldering experience and no clue how difficult it may be, even for someone who does solder.

The PSU I'm not too worried about. Just purchased a new 1kW, as I plan on getting a new GPU, and possibly a second for SLI down the road. I would like to fix this mobo before forking over $225 for a new one, or at least know that I have a good chance of getting a new one through ASUS before spending $20+ on shipping.

If I clear out the holes on the mobo, I guess I run the risk of using a board that is damaged even further than I thought. My assumption is that the 4-pin on the other side of the cpu also needed to be connected, but the PSU only had (1)4x2 pin, which probably slowly degraded the 8-pin socket.

Which 1000 watts i hope you asked here or some place before just buying something random or another Corsair PSU

TX series PSUs have a five year warranty, so if it was purchased it in 2008 I'm afraid you're not covered frown.gif

It's hard to say for certain what was the direct cause of the fault, but it's either the PSU or mobo

Unless it was a seriously faulty connector on the mobo, odds are it was the PSU, which means ASUS would most probably not honor the warranty.

As far as removing the melted plastic, I'm a bit unsure.

I take it has bonded itself to the mobo connector?

Yes, I haven't taken the board out yet, but it looks as if some of the plastic melted and solidifies to at least one of the pins. The other 3 connectors on top have a healthy dose of extra plastic lining the inside. frown.gif

I know it's past the 30 day replacement for newegg, but is there any chance they would still replace it if asus won't honor their warranty? Never had the pleasure of dealing with returns with newegg.
