Also Tomb Raider has a Hard Mode you know. It is also a entirely a different type of game. It has nothing to do with brain activity, if anything you are toning your reflexes while playing tomb raider. As you need to tone your shooting skills. Though IDK you could be someone that plays games on easy because they are not vary good with the mouse? Or maybe you just only like RPGs.

I like plenty of games, RPG's are definitely my favorite though. I'm fine with a mouse and I play most of my games, especially RPGs on the hardest difficulty possible, and if possible, with mods to increase difficulty further. Unlike most gamers I like mental challenge, not reflex or artificial challenge. Though I wasn't really talking about difficulty as in difficulty modes, Tomb Raider is just a casual games, it was created so children could play it as well. It's very simplistic and has tons of QTEs(making any moment that required a complex thought do-able by simply tapping a key). It's an easy game due to this, that's all I was saying.

Right, I meant was that it is incorrect to say that the performances by the actors and actresses do not have to do with the story. And what I mean by acting being important is that if your game utilizes voice acting and motion capture, that is just as important as the plot. If the game does not utilize that stuff and goes in a different direction then that is different. But we would probably agree that if you had 2 games, 1 with bad acting and the other with good acting, that would impact the storytelling and thus impact the story a lot.

Uncharted had a plot that is reminiscent of many big budget Hollywood summer action movies. The acting is what sold the game to many fans and the acting is what made me appreciate the story a lot more. If it had poor acting and motion capture, then I would not care about the plot. On the other hand, if it was so plot heavy while at the same time marginalizing the efforts of the cast, that would be a bad story as well.

Hi,

I’ve been away from PC Gaming for a number of years, and am looking to catch up.

I would weigh good story/writing over acting, and both over graphics.

Sounds like some of you feel the Mass Effect series is best-in-class when it comes to such things as story/writing.

I’ve never played any of the ME series, but I have played the Half-Life 2 trilogy.

So, if you don’t mind helping me out…based on your opinion, how would you rate series such as Mass Effect and BioShock relative to the HL2 series (putting graphic quality aside)?
This would help me to put them into context with a series that I am familiar with.

Thx

If you believed Half Life 2 to have good writing and story then you should be blown away by Mass Effect. Mass Effect is a fantastic trilogy, though it is an action RPG so gameplay is a tad more complex than Half Life 2. Great story, some of the best developed characters you'll find in the gaming industry(many of the go through 3 entire games with you), and Mass Effect 3 has some of the best third person gameplay out of any game.

Other games you may want to check out are..
-Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age: 2, and the upcoming Dragon Age Inquisition. In my opinion, the writing is generally better than Mass Effect though it's hard to compare their stories as it's in a completely different setting, I like Dragon Age more though.

-Fallout: New Vegas. Great open world RPG with excellent writing and a very reactive story that changed to choices you make it, leading to a very different 'main quest experience' each time you play it, depending on which paths you take and choices you make.

-The Walking Dead: Season 1 and Season 2: An amazing episodic series of games by Telltale. You've probably heard of The Walking Dead franchise before, the games are definitely the best medium for this franchise. Season 1 is an amazing and highly emotional ride with some of the best and most reactive character development in the industry, I've never seen any other studio create more human characters before. Season 2 is currently in progress with only 2 episodes out so far but it's shaping up to be even better than the first.

-The Wolf Among Us: Season 1. Another series by Telltale, it's in its first season right now. Only 3 episodes in but each has been an amazing story. Definitely has some of the most impressive storytelling in gaming, just like The Walking Dead. Having just finished Episode 3, the story is ramping up and getting extremely interesting. It's just so good.

-Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Not as impressive as the other games listed but regardless it has better writing than most games and a very interesting story that touches upon humanity. It's a strong RPG that offers 2 distinct ways to play the game, but it focuses on stealth and using your head to get through each level, it also has a very impressive persuasion mechanic that beats all others. It's definitely a great game.

Other honorable mentions would be Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2(both of these are currently in early access right now on Steam), Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1 and 2, Baldurs Gate 1-2(These are all late 90's, early 2000 RPGs. Great games if you can deal with 2D and isometric perspective, these all contain some of the best writing and story in video games. I just decided to list more modern games above) and Spec Ops: The Line(A great story in the guise of a generic shooter).

Mass Effect and Bioshock are on much, much higher levels when it comes to writing. Story and writing weren't a particularly strong focus with HL2, but it is for these games. HL2 is still a way better game than Bioshock in my opinion, much less claustrophobic and a bit less repetitive.

The Dragon Age franchise is similar to Mass Effect, they're made by the same people and have very similar storytelling techniques so I recommend them as well. The delivery in these games is just the best out there, they create a story and characters that are really defined by the player, making it feel like you're really part of the story. I second all of Enad1's recommendations, those games are just a step above most others in terms of writing and also gameplay. I also recommend the Metro franchise, some of the best story driven shooters though unlike Bioshock they offer much more than just corridor shooting from a gameplay standpoint.

Let me break this down for you since you clearly didn't pay attention.

Early in Booker/Comstock's life, after the battle of wounded knee, he was presented with a life changing decision by the preacher in the river whether to wash away his sins and be a new man. Booker declined, comstock accepted.

Due to his messing around with space/time Comstock couldn't have a child, so he decided to use the Lutece-machine to steal Booker's daughter by presenting him with a no-win situation. That daughter is Elizabeth/Lamb. Another side-effect of space-time manipulation is rapid aging, which is why Comstock looks so old. The same effect can be seen to a lesser extent on Elizabeth if you look closely.

Booker kills Comstock, but that doesn't remove the countless other comstocks in alternate dimensions. Booker makes the decision with Elizabeth that Comstock must never be born (again).. thus Booker dying at the end of Infinite in the river.

Elizabeth then goes on the war-path across dimensions to kill the remaining comstocks, one of which didn't successfully abduct Elizabeth... and the portal closed, cutting off her head. To escape from the terrible thing he had done, comstock has the Lutece twins send him to an alternate dimension.... Rapture. wiping his memory of the killing of the baby. Elizabeth used Sally as bait in order to get comstock/booker to where she can kill him with the ultimate irony... and some big daddy. This was the last Booker/comstock.

Right afterward, Elizabeth is killed by the big daddy. Remember that Elizabeth is spread across all dimensions due to the finger incident, much like the lutece's, and an alternate self of hers returns to rapture in order to fix what she had screwed up, namely leaving Sally who she put in a really bad place. Upon returning, she realizes she is lacking much of her power, and finds out she is dead... and stuck in Rapture. Booker is only a manifestation of her memories of him as well. It's confusing.

Elizabeth finds out that she= little sisters, big daddy = songbird, fink = suchon, etc... and you are the key to it all. Without you raising the prison and allowing Atlas/Fontaine to learn the "ace in the hole", Jack would have never returned to Rapture to kill Andrew Ryan, free the little sisters, and break the circle forever.

(yea... i wasn't that thorough... but it should help you understand things better)

It is kind of hard to agree with you when you have so many misspellings and grammatical errors.
