Adding USB ports... PCI card vs. 9pin header cable?

Thread Starter
I want to add a couple extra USB 2.0 ports to my case. I'm wondering if there is any difference whatsoever between a 20pin PCI card, or a 9pin USB header cable. Is one faster or superior?

I assume the 20pin allows for more USB ports. But is the 9pin faster because it is strictly dedicated for USB? I just need someone to give me advice. Both are relatively the same price, so I can choose whichever one makes the most sense.

My motherboard has 2 free 9pin USB connectors on the motherboard. But I also have a PCI slot as well. Unfortunately, my motherboard doesn't support USB 3.0

I'd imagine the PCI card supports higher power output, you know sometimes you plug a device into the front panel and it doesn't work as expected due to power?

you could always add a usb 3.0 pci-e 1x card

Switched, lighted, powered USB 2.0 less than $8 with power adapter off ebay.
Works great.

I thought the same thing as well. But unfortunately I have a MicroATX motherboard, and the only PCI-e x1 is being covered by my GPU. So I have to go with good ol' PCI.

You shouldn't notice a difference between the two, although I'd probably just go with the 9 pin header as you wouldn't have an extra USB controller you had to power, etc.
