[geekwire] Microsoft researcher’s 1991 video could torpedo Apple’s key ‘slide to unlock patent - Page 6

Was the video ever published outside the university? Was it shown at conferences and such? If so, then it could be prior art but it is still tough to invalidate a patent unless it was already being commercialized, not just thought up by an academic.

Apple would never study older designs or try to capitalize on proven concepts.
Apple gives birth to virgin ideas, only, and produces them with NEW, innovative tooling.
You hear that Mary? New tooling.
Just a virgin birth is not enough if it comes out using old methods.

Happy Easter.

Thus patents, which were set up to stifle innovation, have made themselves irrelevant and useless. Time to abandon them and adopt the system that worked for thousands of years before patents were adopted by the wealthy to concentrate their wealth.

Okay. Invent something really neat and bring it to market, and I'll buy a copy, reverse engineer it, and then start producing it alongside you for cheaper. Whereas you have to recoup RnD costs, I get off scott free and use your own work against you.

How's that incentive to invent doing?

Innovation is the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs, whereas invention is a patented technological solution (method, apparatus or process), a form, a composition of matter, that is useful and has an element of novelty..I posted that video to make the same point that you make:Apple fans are adamant about Apple inventing everything..But Apple does indeed take credit for some things that they did not create, nor modify them at any level for better performance, like the Magsafe..Is really taking an already clever concept which is widely used in some other market in the world and patent it,innovation? No it is not,in my humble opinion. It is marketing and business, and to that I tip the hat to Apple..
I don't consider myself an Apple hater nor a fanboy of any kind whatsoever, but all these news and stories about lawsuits concerning basic kinds of technology just seem silly to me,is all..
Again,I value Apple as a quite innovative company, with overpriced (IMHO) ,very cool technology products, but I believe that their nowadays reputation of bickering and fighting, has surely made them,as a company, lose respect in the eyes of healthy consumers..

Science progressed without patents for thousands of years yet now for some reason we need idiotic companies patenting rounded corners or slide to unlock to keep R&D going.

I can only imagine the inventors of the wheel, discoverers of cooking, fire, and everything else patenting their discoveries or inventions rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gif

Unless you're the CEO of some oil company who in the 1970's said that the electric car is an invention that should never be repeated. Patents exist solely for those with the money to bribe and sue to wield massive power over everyone else.

That is a very narrow view. Archimedes didn't require a plasma reactor or have to employ 400 biologists to come up with buoyancy. Obviously, science has progressed to the point where major investments are needed to progress the field. I think patents need to be reworked, but protection from copying for some length of time is needed to recoup development costs. Its the exploitation of the system that needs to be worked on.
