Question on making an old arcade emu-box.

I'm looking at having free time this summer, and can get my hands on one of those old arcade game shells. I was thinking about gutting it, putting an ITX PC in it, an LCD screen, and 2 xbox controllers. Thought about loading up the HDDs with the classic emulators, and all of the old NES, SNES, ect. roms. Not sure how I would do the UI for it, or which OS, but would like thoughts on it before I start making plans. Anyone tried this?

There are a lot of forums online specific to arcade machines and emulation. I'd recommend searching for those as their wealth of information will be light years beyond what you could gather here.

I would recommend using a tube style screen and hard wired arcade buttons and sticks running through any of the commonly available USB connected controller boards. I use MAME myself, but don't have the space to set up a full cabinet yet. I have two 32" tube 720p TVs stacked aside in the shed for when I do my builds. There are a lot of UI setups for these as well. I'm not up to current on what's available though.

i've built my own arcade cabinet, there are templates online for the cabinet,

i used a very old pc from like 2005, my first built one, and bought a rom disk online. it had like 6k games on it.

very easy to do.

hyper spin is a nice UI

Very interesting. I am just in the information gathering state but this summer it will likely be a build log. (Once Frosted Onyx is done)
