Can you crossfire these with a few 290xs? Just curious if I can re-use some hardware while ridding myself of an MST hub, that price though frown.gif

Effective is pretty relative.

I don't think anyone doubted that the part would work, but it's cooling is not dramatically more effect than the reference cooler on a 290X is.

The ARES wasn't dual Hawaii and 10mm thicker than the 40mm radiator on the GTX 295X2 is potentially ~25% more fin area, all other things being equal.

The idea that the 295X2 had to work because the ARES II worked is an utterly unfounded leap based on faulty logic; they are not comparable. The 295X2 had to work because they wouldn't be able to sell it if it did not.

I'm still waiting for some tests on the 295X2 with throttling disabled in something like OCCT or FurMark so we can see how well the cooling handles actual peak loads.

That's another thing most of the review are not testing SLI vs 295X2..whats up with that?

Most likely yes. You could CF 7970 with 7990 no prob.

But the question is why would you? Imagine the horrible scaling and and possible studder.

Yes, you can xfire a 7990 + 7970 and another 7970 too. As well as the 7950. Amd is gracious enough to allow this crossfire combinations as long as its in the same core tier/family. So, you can xfire a 295x2 with a 290/290X or 295x2 + 290x+290x etc. You can't do this with Nvidia (ie 690+680). In the case of the 7990 and 295x, the displayports is probably a good reason to xfire it w/ a or a couple single core cards.

Scaling, it really depends on what you're doing. Tahiti was pretty good at scaling compared to Nvidia to begin with. Sometimes its good, other times it sucks. This can be said for both sides. Amd generally needs more driver maturity to tidy up issues w/ crossfire. But when it works, its awesome. I'm loving my 5x1 setup (which btw, Nvidia can't do) and gives my four cards a good work out smile.gif

Just for the heck of it, i'll be testing once I get the card in hand biggrin.gif
