EM railgun technology would rely on an electromagnetic force known as the Lorenz Force in order to rapidly accelerate and launch a projectile between two conductive rails. This particular guided projectile can launch at extremely high velocities, so much so it can hit a target far, far away that conventional guns simply cannot reach, all the while without losing much kinetic energy to damage the target and doing away with the need for a high explosive payload.

Among the high-energy EM railgun’s targets? Being a lethal and effective weapon against multiple threats, including enemy warships, small boats, aircraft, missiles and land-based targets. Looks like years of research is finally about to bear fruit.

See that?

I've applied for a few jobs at General Atomics...they said no.

well it s very very unefficient , so much power lost in trying to spread the rail apart and heat , you can easily reach about mach 3-4 with pressure and vacuum , which is way more efficient .
the bank of blue thing behind are capacitor/battery , it s about 10x more capacitor/battery then they use in the LHC kicker magnet which has a current of 72 kA , yes 72000 amps in a non-supra magnet, but it's long to load even with access to mainland 380000V line so imagine on a ship lol

The biggest benefit is the lack of explosive needed for the desired effect. MUCH less shrapnel.

The rail gun scene really was awesome in transformers.
this should be much more cost effective then launching a missile

That's the only thing I can think about, Transformers has corrupted me. God that was a bad movie. tongue.gif

Electromagnetic cannons (railguns/coilguns) are inefficient devices per se... The thing is their power scales nicely with the amount of current you can cram into it. And nuclear warships do have a lot of that.
