While this is an old stand-by, I doubt it applys in this case. This is genuinely one of the things they have been struggling with for a very long time.

Your post could very well be true. Who knows. The US, working with Britain, had radar-evading stealth technology in the late 1940s. The F117 Knighthawk was an insane piece of machinery in the 1980s and supposedly had its roots all the way back to the 1960s. I guess only time will tell whether its already operational and saying things like this is just blowing smoke...or it really is that hard to get a true rail gun operational and mobile. thumb.gif

The US has been working on rail guns for 20+ years. The earlier designs were supposed to be smaller and more mobile (tank mounted, Mach 3, 18 inch tungsten rod projectile). The naval vessel is a stopgap compromise, as power generation aboard a nuclear powered vessel is a lot easier. Mobile generation of sufficient power has been the biggest problem with rail guns for over a decade.

Edit: Here's a document regarding US railgun tests performed in 1989.

My statement on them struggling, and not having it for awhile, is only based on my fathers work in the 80's on them for the Government. biggrin.gif

He actually uses parts of the project around his office as paper weights and pen holders! Not terribly sure how Uncle Sam would feel about that, but screw him!

Generally speaking though, as you did state, what is disclosed now as being in use was typically initially launched 20+ years ago.

Although, technically, I believe the Nazi's built the first functional "rail" gun back in WW II.

I still find it funny how some are confused with Rail mounted Artillery and actual Railguns. lachen.gif

It's a joke, because it is on "rails". Kind of why I quoted the word and used bold on the word.....

You people are all too damn serious around here anymore.

Well the germans sort of had a railgun in WW2, but with explosions instead of electricity.
