[UG] Navy To Deploy Railgun In 2016 - Page 4

What fun is that?

We'd all love to see an Iowa type ship or larger armed with arrays of railguns. biggrin.gif

The way railguns fire and the big fireball behind the projectile may result in something like this

It's a win/win/win, they have been working on railgun tech for decades for a reason.

Ever seen a 2200uF, 50V capacitor explode? Or shorted the terminals of a 450V, 560uF capacitor? It's impressive. And that's peanuts next to the storage needs of a railgun. When the railgun is charged, you don't want to be near the capacitors if they get hit...

Nope.... the beauty of this is that you can use more small ships but still have near the firepower of a battleship.

Instead of ten turrets firing 2 rounds a minute (20 rounds per minute)... imagine one turret firing 1 round every 2 seconds (30 rounds per minute)! Not saying we are there yet but that's the endgame.

Hmmmm.... could they mitigate by dropping a cable into the ocean as a sink?

Try powering that......

...and are there still global treaties on navy tonnage?

Actually, the alternative weapon is a directed laser (and that is still under development last I heard).

I'll raise your particle beam with micro black hole cannon or anti-matter shell!

I'm talking about a failure mode in which the energy stored in a capacitor or battery is released outside the normal circuit. For instance, if a bank of 2kV 1F capacitors feeding their Cockroft-Walton multiplier gets hit by shrapnel, you could see megajoules of energy being released as heat and concussion. It would be like a bomb going off.

That time I shorted a 450V 560uF capacitor was impressive. It was charged to just around 50 joules, and when that energy was dissipated as heat in a fraction of a second it gave a flash like a camera flash, with a bang like a handgun, and scorched the circuit board it was in. Imagine that multiplied by five or six orders of magnitude.

I hope they have their energy storage behind armor plate...

Problem with beam weapons is line of sight - you can only hit what you can see. From 50m above the water that means your range to the horizon is only 25km.

A lot of naval warfare is now carried out over the horizon with aircraft or even satellites providing target coordinates. A rail gun would be able to hit targets that are out of its line of sight as the projectiles will follow a ballistic trajectory - with railguns they are looking at ranges of at least 370km (from a 2008 US Navy test).

I can't imagine that is much worse than an entire munitions armory blowing up in a battleship during WWII due to a direct hit or fire.

wouldn't do anything to improve the day : P , I supposed the could keep the banks in bunches , if one gets hit you don't have 100s of KJ of energy messing the day up . When the caps fail even internally , it can spit the steel cans the capacitors are made in . If a bank was hit and one shorted and the rest discharged into it , the thing becomes a bomb with rapid air expansion due to the extreme heat of the arc created then you have oil / dielectric and steel shrapnel

Someone when changing of a bank of capacitors the voltage multiplier failed and a cap shorted , all the energy was dumped into the cap from the main ones and the whole multiple exploded sending steel can bits every ware along with paper and oil .
