Which CPU? - Page 3

Thread Starter

Yeah, so I'm looking at upgrading to new parts for myself, RMA'ing the CPU and maybe the motherboard (which I seriously doubt has any issues) and giving it to my mom along with my XFX Black Edition 750W PSU and possibly if I'm in a good mood over my OC with the new part my GTX 460 to give her a minor upgrade. The problem is what do I buy, and does any combination let me get say a decent XSPC kit. I have ~$200 at best buy so that's most of the CPU cost taken care of if I go with one of the models they have one their site.

I'm still convinced it's the motherboard though... Every hardware problem I've had was ultimately related to the motherboard, and I've never heard of a 2500k dying with those temps.

I would have to agree with this...I could be wrong, but based on the information you gave us so far, this would be my best guess.

Z87 + a 4670k is best if you're buying new. They are a bit unpredictable when it comes to an OC, but not as bad as everyone says... Alot of people hit an OC "wall" when they forget to raise VRIN, and benchmark temperatures are dramatically higher than everyday ones because they use AVX2 instructions.

To be fair, we don't know for sure, but I've never heard of a 2500k (at a sane voltage) degrading to the point where it isn't stable at stock.

I don't know if this helps. I bought my son a AsRock Z87M OC Formula & i5-4670K. I am cooling it with a Corsair A70 (air cooler). I left it on auto changed the multiplier to 44x and my temps are 68c max. I haven't fine tuned it yet, but it is stable.

Yes, with $700 you can get
MB - $200
CPU- $240
Water Kit - $240 (http://www.frozencpu.com/products/20837/ex-wat-261/XSPC_Raystorm_AX240_Extreme_Universal_CPU_Water_Cooling_Kit_w_D5_Variant_Pump_Included_and_Free_Dead-Water.html?tl=g59c683s2174)

Total $680

Well... hopefully this doesn't jinx it or anything but It just passed 10 rounds of Prime Blend (v 27.9) still going, not going to say what multiplier, but both CPU-Z and AISuite are reporting the vcore hasn't gone above 1.49v (staying in the 1.484-1.488 range) no ripple in the PSU voltages being reported. Temps ~65C so far on air.

Still even if this works I'll have to build a new PC, I may just be able to skip out on an RMA.

Heh, I'm starting to get uneasy with some of these temps,  it's only been running for 19 minutes and the temps are towards 78C in places, yeah lol it started throttling, going to try to edge off the vcore a bit.

Nudging the vcore down results in a Windows 8 error message going by CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT, will look at the logs in a few minutes, but I assume it's vcore related, so I'm expecting a kernel power event.

Edit: Yes indeed it was a Kernel Power error message.

As I said before even if this chip isn't bad it still doesn't help me solve the problem of what to get.
