What distro do you reccomend?

I found an old computer and want to turn it into a minecraft server.
These are the specs I know of:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
RAM: 1024MB DDR Ram by Hynix
OS: Windows XP

Now, this thing is so slow it froze while loading the control panel. So I need something light that still supports a Minecraft server.
And it has to be installable by USB drive.

If you can help me, please respond.

Raw debian command line only. Isn't to hard to set up a server with it. Bit of googling and you will be set. I figured out a minecraft server in about an hour with a bit of googling but I'm a little slow. You probably faster.

Second Debian. Install is pretty easy (there is a graphical mode for the installer), and after the install if the command line is intimidating you could install openbox or something light and just run it during your setup.

I try Debian 7 with the graphical mode because I'm not an advance Linux user and it was easy and working great.

Greetings
Running a dedicated, single game server does not require a lot of CPU. Mostly it requires reasonably fast hard dives and RAM based on the complexity of the game and the number of expected clients. There had to be something wrong for a box with OPs specs to fail so badly with XP. Even though XP, properly installed and administered should do OK on that box (although it would be better if it had more RAM) there is no doubt that Linux can do that job more efficiently, assuming OP can administer Linux.

FWIW I ran a Minecraft server for years on a Super Micro Socket 370 1.4GHz box with 3 Gigs of ram running Slackware. One of the "Worlds" grew big enough that, at one point it took an hour and a half to ride all the way around the rail system. It ran flawlessly with 10-15 clients. At that point network bandwidth and ram started to become occasionally less than ideal. It is Java, after all.

I am currently trying to install MineOS. If that won't work I'll try raw Debian. Commandlines are fun smile.gif

Use raw Debain with Gnome, KDE or xfce. Don't use Mint or the variant, LMDE. They're both buggy garbage piles.
