PCIe 2.0 x16 vs x4 for 680 SLI

I have my motherboard SLI hacked so the second card is running at x4. Will this have bandwidth issues, and am I losing performance by doing this?

I wanted to wait to upgrade my motherboard when skylake is released in hopes it will be a big performance increase, but if my current motherboard is causing my 680s to perform noticeably slower than it should I'll take care of it now.

Hacked? That is the stock specification on that board: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=Specifications&Model=P67%20Pro3%20SE

x16 slot 2 and x4 slot 4

You will lose a couple of frames per second, at most maybe 4 or 5 fps. No big deal.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll just wait then. It's hacked in that my board doesn't support SLI. Actually SLI isn't supported in x4 at all.

I've heard that x4 hacked SLI only loses 3-5% FPS in most titles. You'll have to do some testing and see. It's probably not enough of a drop to warrant buying a new MB that supports x8/x8 or x16/x8 unless you wanted to stick a 3770K in there and get PCIe 3.0 at the same time. A lot of expense for a small performance improvement, IMHO.

True.. I had forgotten about that. Did you have to do anything to get it working?

I just used a program called hyper SLI. It works well, and I havent had any issues. Mostly was wondering if running my second card at x4 made a difference.

Greg

So if I did get a much better MB and a new CPU how much improvement would I see? 10-15%? Ive had some overclocking issues, so a more stable setup wouldnt hurt. However, if next years chips are 30%+ improvement ill definitely wait.
