8 core wins hands down. at a lower voltage too. That stutter, if you experience it in gaming, should go away with extra core support.

In most modern games, yes. More modules means less resource sharing.

I don't think it works like that (but I might be wrong). Each module is 2 cores, but I dont think you can disable per core- just per module. Disabling 1 module would make it a FX-6300. The way I understand it is: the reason why 4 modules is better is because Windows Task Schedule knows that if <4 threads is being used that it should load 1 thread per module. Not until 5 threads are being executed will it 'double up' on an FX-8530. On the FX-6300 it has to double up after the 4th thread.

CMT scaling penalties are minor (~10% per core), the biggest bottleneck to gaming performance is the way the execution resources are arranged, and their poor access to cache (high latency, low effective bandwidth), not the front end. A PileDriver module has basically the same front-end (dual threaded, 32 byte per cycle fetch rate, 4 IPC decoder) as a hyper-threaded haswell core. Obviously there's plenty of front-end performance there to scale up to more throughput, as the HT-haswell core is achieving up to ~30% higher compute throughput than a PD module clock for clock with the same basic limitations on the front end.

The FX-6300 and FX-8350 actually share about the same "binning" quality on average in terms of voltage required to achieve a particular clock speed, which means overclocking differences come down to thermal dissipation and available power. If the system in question is limited by available power to the CPU and/or dissipation capacity, the FX-6300 will clock a bit higher, which will positively effect most game engines more than having another module at a lower clock speed.
