I'm not sure if it's my monitor (Dell SP2309W), but I have a curious issue when using DVI on it. When I use HDMI, image seems clear and crisp, but using DVI makes the image a lot brighter and even a bit offensive to see. This has happened on 2 different computers, with 4 different GPUs (2 AMD 2 Nvidia).

I would use HDMI just because it's a more "future-proof" standard, since most laptops are foregoing VGA and DVI, all modern consoles use HDMI, and most high end GPU's are either focusing on DP, HDMI and dual DVI at the professional ranges.

EDIT: found a couple articles about that. Seems that AMD and Intel, among with others won't be supporting VGA and DVI by next year, maybe with their respective 20nm lineup upgrades.

HDMI is based on DVI, they took an open standard, added audio, made a few tweaks, and charge to make products that use it.

The only time I ever use HDMI with a computer is with HTPC's, to have DTSHD/DTHD audio, plugged into my Pioneer SC-79, for watching 1080p video content with 11-13.2 audio (Front High, Front Wide, etc added to 7.1 for a 3-dimensional 360deg audio field, and two dual-subwoofers to eliminate the tonal issues frequently present with single subs).

DVI also is full 0-255, while HDMI often sets the computer to the more limited range that is utilized by television/film. This will cause black crush and bleached out whites on a computer.

The true successor to DVI is DP, and I don't foresee the former being phased out until the latter is the market leader (years away).

Summary: DL-DVI-D is the superior choice over HDMI in every situation except for connecting a PC to a receiver as with an HTPC. It was designed for mmultimedia in the living room, instead of perfect accurate display on a computer monitor.

It'll take a little bit longer for VGA to completely die out as there are tons of Display Port to VGA adapters out there. DVI and HDMI are definitely the way to go and I just got my first monitor that doesn't have DVI (HDMI and VGA only) and I have to say HDMI was a bit easier to deal with. One simple cable, no twisting screws or anything.

I dont know which one js better bet.and maybe the only screen that I found with dvi is sold
DVI and HDMI are electically the same, DVI/HDMI adapters are just passive adapters.

HDMI has some extra features/pins, so I suppose it's the "superior" standard... but for a normal PC monitor, it doesn't really matter.
