New Sony a7s ~ 4k video, 409,600 ISO

Newest FF mirrorless from Sony, the a7s.

It wouldn't be NAB without a major 4K announcement from Sony, and that's exactly what we've got here. The company introduced the Alpha A7s at its Las Vegas press event today, bringing 4K video to the popular full-frame mirrorless camera line. The "s" in the new camera's name stands for sensitivity, and to that end it supports an ISO range of 50 to 409,600. The 12.2-megapixel full-frame sensor limits downscaling with 3,840 x 2,160 (QFHD) 4K video, ultimately resulting in higher quality footage. While you can store 1080p video internally, you'll need to use an external recorder to capture 4K video, which the camera outputs with 4:2:2 color sampling via HDMI.

There's sample footage in this video @ 50,000 ISO and it looks amazing.

What do you think folks, new low light king?

Seems kind of strange.. 'capable of 4k recording.. if you have an external recorder'. That said, I'd like to hear what Brian has heard about this since he's actually into video.

Also, what exactly is the point of ISO 409,600? I never go near 12,800 - why would I need to go six stops past that? Does it produce 8 bit images at that ISO? (Not trying to hate here, but I barely see the practical everyday application for the current 102,400 ISO, so I think it's a reasonable assertion)..

its misleading. capable of 4K 4:4:4 with an external device that encodes the video and outputs it in a higher quality

HDMI straight out still can do 4K 4:2:2

unless im mixing the a7s with the new GH3 which also requires an external encoder in order to get the full 4K quality possibility

ive also heard complaints that the low light leaves you wishing it actually lived up to the hype. i havent looked at samples but just hearing gossip and talking to people at expos that the camera has come at a nice time but still has a few bugs to tweak

i dont like to go by streamed video samples. id rather have actual footage that is uncompressed.

comparing and examining footage on youtube/vimeo doesnt really show the true performance of a camera. its close but not quite there honestly

someone that shoots nikon will be able to tell you why you need 1/2 a million iso....since that is what makes the d4s so perfect in every single way devil.gif

there are no 12mp full resolution samples out for the camera, but with sonys current high iso performance it should be on par with the d4s. so that means 128k usable 256 in a pinch and 409 is just marketing fluff....

from what i gathered 4k is recorded off hdmi 2 to an external recorder. internally it does 1080 with a more robust codec than before.

the important part is that there is no pixel binning/line skipping so there is less if not completely remove moires in video and almost the full 35mm (1.1 crop or something) frame is used (canon 1dc uses an aps-h crop at 4k).

looks like a good video camera, but i dont know if it is a good photo camera....

and sony still lacks lenses there like 5 native lenses right now for FE and maybe 20 fullframe A-mounts.....they really need to stop coming out with multiple new bodies every year and give us more glass....

guess i was thinking of the new GH4 which requires an external encoder for full quality 4K. i look forward to testing out the new a7 for myself as there is a lot of wishy washy opinions on it
