[GS] Dark Souls 2 on the PC: Has From Software Learned Its Lessons?

Gamespot's impression of Dark Souls 2 on PC, if you are contemplating picking up the game or interested or even worried about the PC version this could be a good read.

It’s no surprise that PC enthusiasts should expect better--and that they remain wary of the impending release of Dark Souls II. And so I bring some good news: Based on the preview copy I’ve been immersed in, Dark Souls II is a notably better port than the original Dark Souls was. When you set the resolution at 1920 X 1080, the image you see is actually rendering at that resolution, in contrast to Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. The game runs at a brisk 60 frames per second, even on modest PCs. Unfortunately, the game still bombards you with Xbox 360 controller button prompts, even when you do not have a controller plugged in and are navigating with a mouse and keyboard.

Unfortunately, if you were hoping for the PC version to showcase the impressive lighting we saw in pre-release video, you’ll be sad to learn that the lighting remains as flat on the PC as it did on consoles. Carrying a torch through the dim hallways of The Lost Bastille brings with it a few moody moments, but nothing on par with the way lightning pierced the bleak darkness as it did in early previews, in which we traversed Drangleic Castle in pursuit of the Looking Glass Knight. I have no doubt that modern PCs could have rendered the elaborate real-time lighting that characterized the game’s early builds without trouble, but it appears that From Software sought platform parity, which is a shame. After all, the community has already proven how beautiful these games can be with a little extra development effort.

The game should be good I hope, but a major disappointment of lacking the lighting. rolleyes.gif
But then again, who plays a Souls game for the graphics?
But if they pull a Tomb Raider with a next gen exclusive definitive edition... sozo.gif

The weirdest thing is that I can swear I played the PS3 Network Test with this lighting in place, not sure why it got cut from all platforms, maybe the version i played is more or less the same as the retail version and not as good as the pre-release one.

The higher resolution and sharper textures give places like Sinner’s Rise and Huntsman’s Copse greater visual definition. Details on armor are easier to admire,
It appears the PC version is getting higher resolution support from the start, and we dont have to mod the game to run it at higher resolutions.

Still can't comprehend the removal of that beautiful lighting. Like, out of all platforms...

Yea on NeoGaf someone linked to the developer stating that during the beta the game borderline stable so they decided to change it. I don't understand it for the PC though.

Well it's obvious. Their statement that PC was lead development -> http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=538551 was a lie. They scrapped that, made console version first, and after it went gold, started to port to PC. So all dat lighting is probably on some usb stick in an office drawer loool

That was the one thing I was hoping they'd fix this time.

Does this mean I should play this game with a Xbox controller instead for better overall gameplay experience? The game looks interesting and I been wanting to pick up the Dark Souls 1 when I can get it back on sale again on steam. biggrin.gif

The Dark souls games are usually best played with a controller anyway.
