Network HELP!!!

Thread Starter
So im trying to fix a problem that one of my friends is having and i cant seem to pin point the problem. He had a problem with windows and had to re install windows. And now his ping is bad and his down speed and up speed is really bad, he always lags when it comes to gaming and even skype calls. But what i don't understand is that before the windows problem his connection was amazing. What can be the problem? We installed the drivers correctly and everything but his connection is still bad. He is currently using a ASUS PCE-N15 Wireless Adapter witch i think is a pretty good WiFi adapter any help would be awesome!

Thanks

What was the problem with windows? Did he get infected? If so, are you sure you killed the virus? That could be part of it.

need more information... what is is NIC showing for connection speed? What is the router showing? What kind of signal strength is showing for the connection? Have you tried changing channels on the connection? What trouble shooting have you done? Is the router he is connecting to his? Or someone elses?

Have not trouble shoot, im not good when it comes to networking, He is connected to his own router. Also he gets around 4 to 5 bars of signal strength, and what do you mean about changing channels? Oh and the problem was that he got the " black screen of death"

OP... most routers / Wifi adapters have the ability to change frequency or Channels.... as some channels in the immediate area may be congested.

That adapter shows to have 11 channel capability in the US, 13 in Europe: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?gclid=CNmCzLTc0r0CFewRMwodCGYAow&Item=N82E16833320143&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-Wireless+Adapters-_-N82E16833320143&ef_id=UzK@4AAABQffZa@S:20140409055729:s

My router for instance:

That would be the first thing I would try.

The black screen of death usually doesn't just happen... there is a reason for it. Any ideas what caused it? If it was a hardware failure.. that could still be affecting the system. If it was a virus.. then unless a full wipe and re-partition was done, the virus may still be there.

I am assuming actual OEM drivers were installed... not just the windows drivers? OEM drivers often are more tweakable....

yes the OEM drivers were intalled and im not too sure what caused the black screen of death but we did do a full wipe and re partition it.

Cool! Check channels... change them. Make sure that antenna's have clean path to router (as much as possible). See if you have the ability to boost power on the router or adapter...

Channels 1, 6 and 11 don't overlap, so stick with those, especially if one of his neighbors have wireless networks that are using the same channel as him. Auto usually auto senses other channels in the area and moves to the next best avialable channel, however some routers do this better then others, and some don't do it properlly if at all.
