A model of these without graphics with beefed up cores for the same price would be such a win but well the extra on chip stuff is not that bad either for when HSA makes it to market.

They are no doubt quite spectacular chips. Although I would not go as far as pick them as first suggestion for low budget gaming machine. Where power consumption is not of major concern there probably some FM2 or FM2+ or even cheapest AM3+ platform might make more sense for gaming in combination of discrete GPU. The cheapest options in these platforms are in the same price ballpark, consume a lot more power and are a lot bigger but also have few additional features that can make them more desirable for a lowest budget gaming machine. Things like having dual channel memory, for a start and often x16 PCIe slot (although to be fair x4 is fine for most GPU's that are in the sensible ballpark compared to the rest of platform cost, say, up to ~150 EUR GPU's). There is no doubt, though, that these thing can actually game at this point, especially when combined with discrete GPU.

HSA has been "coming" for a while. There is some progress in that regard but when doing a gaming rig today it's pretty safe to assume HSA does not exist at all. It might come into fruition over the next couple of years or it might remain vapor and presstalk for the next 5+ years (although I personally believe something will come out of it during the next 2-3 years, I'm just not convinced it will be meaningful for gaming or general applications). So when doing a gaming system today best one can do is going for the best bang for his buck and not to fall victim of "it will be awesome and will release any day now, just wait and be future proof". AMd has a recent track record of seriously over-hyping their stuff and then doing underwhelming delivery (as it was with their first "module" based designs and the statements that the AMD rep was doing during the leadup to that in these forums).

Indeed Carniflex they are above all APUs one should be able to get a good athlon big cores for the same amount.
But this part clocked to 3GHz or even 4GHz could seriously canabalize AMD big core sales.

If only AMD would sell 60 dollar ones that are unlocked.

Which means better power delivery and beefier motherboards (increase in price); then they'd screw their own FX lineup over.

Essentially their AM1 platform (FS1b) would overlap AM3+ then, which is no good.

It would also rival FM2+ in that people would ask why would they buy a Richland Athlon (or any other Piledriver based APU) when they could get a higher Kabini part which would probably do better.

They should do it but at the same time they could cause a lot of issues for their current products.

Well the lower end boards can simply be locked it is always the risk of the overclocker either way.

They would have the problem of competing with themself but I can see Kabini clocked to the moon competing with much higher priced processors. SeronX noted that Kaveri had huge amount of both core as gpu logic disabled due to them not working a behmoth improvement may be comming in a couple of months but it is rather doubtfull that they will get it right and I think the fix will come no earlier than q4 with the comming of Carrizo.

Wait. Since the SATA controller is on the APU, does that mean you can break the 600MB/s cap by upping the the bclk?

Only if the sata clock is linked to the baseclock and it might very well be disconected. Just because the disk interface acts up when the bclk doesn't mean they are linked.

I see you have no experience with playing with PCIe or SATA clocks.

I've made that mistake before. You know how when you overclock data gets corrupted and then you crash? Well PCIe (if your SATA controller is on PCIe) or SATA overclocking does just that! It takes the data that's being ready to be read or written to disk and garbles it up! I lost a ton of data, pretty much everything I wrote to my hard disks that day...

Although really, what AMD should consider doing, is releasing an 8 or 16 core Jaguar part that's unlocked. Something of that calibre would eat into their FX line, but it'd also eat into Intel sales. Everything people whine about with FX (low IPC, high power consumption) doesn't exist with Jaguar.

I shiver with delight at the thought of a 300mm^2 Jaguar die with a big GPU on it and HSA compatibility that's unlocked. If we got that instead of Steamroller FX I'd be completely satisfied.

If 4 jaguar cores can be made to scale up to 4,5GHz it may actually compete with the i5 at 2GHz or with any i3
post #409 of 778
AMD should just skip FX and the branding.

Actually, why couldn't they just replace the GCN cores with good old x86 cores anyway? Why wouldn't that work and what would stop them?

Even if they want to keep APUs they only have to cut down the GCN cores for general every day tasks (Aka powerful enough to handle Windows effects) then we'd all be happy smile.gif

Anything >= 6 cores seems nice, and the power efficiency won't exactly be through the roof either. "Unlocked" means enthusiasts laugh at power consumption. So both parties are happy. If Jaguar cores have higher IPC now, and Puma and Excavator cores are to improve on this why couldn't they compete? Higher IPC = less Ghz = less volts = less power? Surely the power consumption wouldn't sore even if bumped up?

Unless there is a technical constraint to this? (I am not knowledgeable in CPU design biggrin.gif so correct my understanding if I am way off).

But that would be redundent because AMD already have FX4300 for that job. IPC haven't increased by that much for jags and SR.
