At a sinister level, let's assume the cards have a dramatically reduced lifetime:

If they expire early enough in their meaningful depreciation cycle (let's say just before 3 years, when the card's probably worth <$150), you can send that sucker in and have a higher probability of receiving an aftermarket or newer-gen unit in RMA.

That's not bad seeing as the 7970's were over 300$ new when they came out, having the 290's down that low should allow lower budget people to have a "batter" card.

Even though it's still just anecdotal evidence, I had my stock cooler, slightly overclocked 4870 folding/gaming 24/7 and at manually set 100% fan speed for about two and a half years, and the only thing that failed was the fan, and I know many others have done similar things to their cards with little to no significant negative side effects.
