AMD Phenom II X4 955BE help?

I bought this CPU from a friend, and it's having strange temperature while gaming... I got it to service, and stuff, dude changed thermal paste, I got Gamma cooler which he recommended, http://www.deepcool-us.com/product/cpucooler/2013-12/7_459.shtml

On idle it is 32-43C° depends, and in gaming it is 68-80, depends on time in game, never reached over 81, avg is 73-75 C°
75C° is in Tera on preset 4/6. I am wondering is it CPU dying, is it bad voltage, because I got new cooler, and thermal paste is new...

One more question... How long can CPU live with 73C°? It is not constantly over 70, I am not constantly gaming. Avg 4 hours a day?

Your voltage is a bit to high it should be 1.35, my motherboard used to set my old 955 to 1.4 as well, which can be lowered to 1.35, if you are running a stock cooler I'm not surprised you are getting quite high temps. Lowering the Vcore should bring the temps down a bit biggrin.gif

Heres a big problem:

The guy who did these things for you...is an idiot, or, is unaware of the AMD side of computing. The cooler he recommended is good for 95w TDP. Intel CPU's are around that, mostly lower. AMD, and that one in particular, is 125w, meaning its producing significantly more heat than the cooler can expel from the heat sink. The stock cooler would actually be better!

Better YET, get a hyper 212+ or EVO, I had a Phenom 965 at 3.9ghz, stock cooler (for ha-ha's) ran at abpout 68* under load. MUCH too high. Slapping a 20 dollar hyper 212+ onto it lowered my temps by literally 20*c. Literally.

Voltage, to be honest, listen to Ningi07

Stock voltage was something I was almost never on, and really forgot the stock, I was so eager to OC it haha (A big no-no)

I knew there was something fishy XD

Will try all your opinions, and advices! Wish me a luck! ^^

EDITED: And, how to change CPU voltage, there is CPU VDD Voltage, CPU Voltage, CPU NB Voltage, NB Voltage, a lot of voltages, and all are on AUTO.
I want to get to 1.35v, and I've searched all posts, and no1 is telling how...

Yeah, running these chips at 70C for prolonged periods of time isn't going to do good things for the longevity of the chip. :-/

NB Voltage and CPU NB Voltage don't need to be touched at the moment for stock clocks. From your HWMonitor screenshot I think I see the MSI mobo that you have so with that in mind this is the difference between CPU voltage and CPU VDD Voltage:

CPU VDD specifies the voltage bounds (basically the range) in which the regulators will allow the specified cpu voltage.

CPU voltage: This is the voltage supplied to the CPU before Vdroop occurrences (For example: You set the CPU voltage at 1.5V, CPU-Z will report 1.46V-1.48V). If you have ACC/Cool n' Quiet/or phase power is active, the voltage will fluctuate a little bit more, but will basically stick around this range.

So for your specific mobo, those are the two settings you should be looking at carefully.

Btw, if you're going to keep running your Rev C3 955 at stock clocks and considering your cooling situation, I would seriously consider trying to undervolt the chip slightly. When I had only the stock cooler with my 955 chip, I managed to get the Vcore down to 1.22V @ stock clocks and never got above 52 C with video rendering in Sony Vegas. So I would lower the voltage and test for stability in increments. Or you could just set up your CPU voltage (Vcore) to somewhere around 1.3V-1.35V and be set to go. But again, you've got a Rev-C3 chip so in theory you should be able to push it a little bit lower than the 1.3V-1.35V range and get stable results with a little less heat!

I managed to get my voltage down to 1.25-1.29v, temperatures are significantly down, from 75-81 to 55-68 while gaming, if I could only get new cooler any time soon, I only managed to find CM Hyper 212 EVO, around 34-35euros here. But I heard it is doing awesome job, since I play to buy i5 in few months, Hyper 212 is capable of cooling L1155 chipset. smile.gif

Thanks for all your help guys! ^^

No Problem! Yeah the EVO is a little better than the 212, but hey, its only a few bucks more. it competes with 40-50 USD coolers. Since you are upgrading to an i5 SOON (next month or so?) I wouldn't be too up in arms about the temps...although heat is the fastest way to kill a chip, that high is very dangerous. May want to reapply thermal paste or get some better paste, that you can also use on the i5.

*Dont spread, just a pea sized dot on the middle of the CPU because you never know when a good 'ol phenom will come in handy as a test bench for other hardware! Keep it alive!

Or make a keychain out of it smile.gif

OP At 72-74C My overclocked and unlocked Phenom II 565 was shutting down any game being played, so I had to reapply TIM.
I'd say max is 71C although I'm at much higher voltages than you are

I am playing TERA on lets say Medium - High preset, with temp's around 50°C, it is miracle from 75-81 to 50 to 58°C cap!!! It seems I wont ever go to that service guy again.... he fked my PC up...

I'm planning to buy i5 in 3 months, I don't have job, so I must grind money up, university drains, not only my soul but money too, so i5 will be around my B-day, and this little baby 955 will be sold for good price, since it is very very rare here, I saw few used 955's sold for almost full price here.

I find it hard to believe your CPU is stable at those temps.
