Because it has "moar cores"? I find it completely ridiculous, there's no way AMD's going to slap 96 ROPs on a GPU with a 512-bit memory bus, there's not enough memory bandwidth available using GDDR5 to feed such a huge amount of ROPs.
Also suspect are the higher clock speeds along with bigger dies, why would AMD sell the small dies with low clock speed when increased clock speed increases power consumption dramatically?
Also, the Maxwell leak doesn't add up either, not just because of the huge amount of SMMs (20 SMMs, or 2560 CUDA cores, would be enough to outclass a 780 Ti by a decent margin,) but also because of unmatching memory bus width to ROP count.
GPUs don't need higher ROP counts, they need more memory bandwidth to feed those ROPs.
