Should i play the Witcher 1?

Thread Starter
I played the witcher 2 and i had to discipline myself to actually get through the first 10 minutes especially with the keyboard (the controls suck). I plugged in my 360 controller and after about 30 minutes i was so wrapped up in the story and addicted! What a great game! Anyways nothing i found recently comes close. Currently playing skyrim but seems more boring. Should i play the witcher 1? If so are their any graphic mods and could you put me in the right direction? Im a bit of a graphics whore, and have trouble playing older games.

Here you go: http://www.moddb.com/games/the-witcher/mods

It looks good vanilla too. I'm not a graphics whore though.

No, it has crappy controls and graphics is not acceptable (IMO), you will just gonna get frustrated. same thing i did with crysis 1 and mass effect 1, good thing i can get a refund within 24 hours in origin.

Get it on a sale. The story isn't quite as good as the second one, and it has some of the worst combat mechanics ever (worse than Morrowind). The hubs are a bit bigger and have more to do though, it's actually a better RPG than the second one.

Crysis has crappy graphics lol? If it does, then the only good looking games must be Crysis 2 and 3 as well as Metro: Last Light. Or maybe you just dislike realistic art styles. Even Mass Effect's graphics aren't really below average by today's standards, and they both have fine controls (though ME1's cover system is a bit outdated now). The Witcher's graphics aren't that bad either, but controls are definitely lacking like you say.

I'll say this though, if you had to force yourself to beat Witcher 2, it'll take you even longer to beat the first one, if at all.

That's the boat I'm in at the moment. I own them both but want to finish Witcher 1 first, but something about the game just screams don't pick me back up. I don't know what it is, because I like the game. That being said, the combat is pretty bad, but as with all things eventually you get used to it; if you can make it past the first couple hours it shouldn't bother you too much throughout the rest of the game.

That graphics are nowhere near as good as Witcher 2, but they aren't nearly as bad as ghostrider indicates. I'll also agree with Boredgunner, I don't see how the graphics in Crysis 1, or Mass Effect 1 are bad. With Mass Effect the graphics BARELY changed between 1-3. Not disputing they are better by ME3, but for the most part they are the exact same, and all 3 of them are still pretty good looking by today's standards.

Still worth playing though if you like RPGs, I will finish them both one of these days, but knowing me it'll be after Witcher 3 is out.

This thread doesn't encourage me to pick up the witcher again. I only played the second one but i stopped after playing for ~3 hours. I had set difficulty to normal (i usually set difficulty to hard in most games) and i was still dieing constantly so i thought i was doing something wrong. Then i checked youtube and found out that the way to survive on harder difficulties is just quen + evade spam, never touched the game after i saw that video.

Yep TW2 just plays like a hack and slash game, with a few spells. Spam one of the spells and keep rolling around and you win. The first game has awful QTE based combat, you just press LMB at certain intervals to do flashy JRPG-style combos, until you win the fight. To make the game hard they just make you fight a bunch of enemies at once (and/or make certain enemies have a lot of health), not much tactics or strategy behind it.

I'd play TW1 on easy for the story, pretty good.
I didn't really care for the combat mechanics though. If you play it on the hardest difficult combat is very tactical, rather than action. You need to carefully balance skill choice, gear, and using potions. On easy you can just blast through combat and focus on the story.

Don't expect a lively animated combat game like TW2. TW1 is more about stats and timing, the visual is just for fun.

ouch the wixther one is rough, i dont even think i can play it. The graphics are actually impressive for 2006 but all you do is hold the mouse button down and slash. Not a huge fan on keyboard mouse controls and i prefer my xbox controller (used to be a consolse gamer). Some games like battlefield though you need to use the keyboard but its very simple.
