Upgrade Priorities?

Looking to upgrade a build in stages this year (cheaply). Where do you think I should start?

Main objective is to be capable to play games at medium settings. Currently plays low intensity games like League of Legends.

Build:

CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 450 3.2GHz Triple-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Memory: Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5400
Power Supply: CIT 550W Gold 12Cm Silent Atx Power Supply

I would grab an FX-6300($110) and a 750ti/r7 265($150) if you can. This would let you keep your motherboard, although I wouldn't try to overclock. 4GB of ram is adequate, although a 1600 4x2GB is only around $60. Your power supply should be fine. That should play most games at medium to high settings.

Start with the GPU and see how you like the results. If you're going to do a CPU upgrade that is worthwhile it's going to require a new motherboard anyway because you won't be able to run an FX chip fast enough on your current board to effect a large enough change in CPU performance to be worthwhile.

I don't normally recommend any upgrade unless it doubles performance. Less than that, and it's often not enough to be worth it. An FX-6300 or FX-8320 would technically at least "double" your compute capacity, but with most of that performance increase being from parallelism, the improvement in gaming performance won't double. If you could overclock the FX chip to 4.5+ ghz, then it probably would be twice as fast in many games, but since that would require a new motherboard, I would recommend holding off on that upgrade and seeing how things look when you can afford both the CPU+MOBO together. You may get more gaming performance for your money from a haswell chip on a high value motherboard.

I would probably advise a new PSU as well, I wouldn't rely too much on the quality of CIT. As said earlier a 750ti GPU would be a nice upgrade and its not power hungry either.

GPU first, to 750Ti like suggested earlier. Then PSU (not sure about CIT, never heard about that brand) and CPU. smile.gif

Thanks for your replies everyone. I think CIT might just be a UK brand. What CPU cooler would be recommended for the FX-6300? The stock fan on the current CPU gets quite loud so I'd like a quieter solution if possible.
The quietest coolers are the large double tower heat-pipe designs with low rpm fans. Like the Noctua D14, Phanteks PH-TC14PE, Thermalright Silver Arrow, Zalman CNPS14X and CNPS12X.
