@tiihokatti. So one of those cards enables 5.1 I. All applications that support 5.1? Sorry I dont know all the audio terminology.
Yes, games don't have a DTS/DDL encoder so you have to use an external decoder to do it.
And it would be pretty good if you could tell us the model of your AVR. Just to make sure if it has both DTS and DDL support.
There are only 2 smart ways to transfer audio that has over 2 channels to a receiver:

1. HDMI - Doesn't need to encode anything as the bandwidth can handle 8 channels. This is the only (smart) way to get 7.1 sound to a receiver.
2. Optical/coaxial with DTS/DDL encoding - 5.1 sound needs to be compressed using DTS/DDL encoding. 7.1 is impossible to use with optical/coaxial because of the lack of bandwidth.

The stupid way is:
- Use a soundcards 5.1 or 7.1 3,5mm analog outputs to transfer the audio to the receiver. But the pricy receivers features are pretttttttty much completely wasted at this point.

I believe the model is the HT-E550/ZA 5.1, the box is long lost however and there is no indication on the unit itself.

Edit: According to Samsung it supports Dolby Digital, Pro Logic II, and DTS.

Hey....

That is what I do, and not stupid. Unless you have HDMI on the receiver.

I have a nice high end receiver from the Optical Days (HTR-5790) for $100, Nice & heavy with nice quality amps. But Instead of using the Onboard DACs via optical I use my sound card (SB-Z) as a DAC and feed it into the MultiChannel inputs on the back. Receiver is 7.1 so I actually have the side and rear channels in parallel and bi amp my rear tower speakers. Something I couldn't do using Optical. My Soundcard probably has a Batter DAC then my Receiver anyways but they are probably pretty close. All I know is I can now turn my Receiver up high and hear no hiss, unlike my old receiver, and now pushes my speaker harder and cleaner then ever.

OP you will need a sound card that has DD-Live or DTS-connect.

Any suggestions? I do love good quality audio, but a sound card is probably the last thing I'd spend 80+ on.

Cheapest of the cheap:
Xonar DS (uses PCI, not PCIe)

The most expensive card I can recommend:
SBZ (the 85$ one)

The SBZ OEM used to go for ~60$ before...

If you are only using this for Optical get the cheap one.

The Z is nice if you need a headphone amp as well. Also has better Stereo to Surround Mixing, for stereo music. What could be worth it.

Thread Starter
I actually saw that SB one, though it was for $99 (Strongly considering). The ASUS DS lookis like it would work if it had Optical, but the model that has that is the D1. (also $90). I do thank you all for your information, as I was sadly misguied lol. Kinda kicking myself for thinking I could get a good sound card for what I paid ($20 from someone who didn't want it anymore).

Xonar DS has the optical... It just needs the silly adapter that should be bundled with the card (they are really cutting corners with the savings...).
