I play Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is relatively playable on the F2P side of things, though I did end up subscribing. Like most F2P games it has some limitations if you don't subscribe. The game has a fantastic storyline for each class, and each planet you progress through also has its own (albeit shorter) storyline.

My favorite F2P MMO is Ragnarok Online, the best one is probably RIFT.

I picked up The Secret World while it was on slae for $10 (no sub required) and it's been entertaining so far.

RIFT also has the best F2P model by far. It isn't P2W, the best items in the game can't be purchased with real money, they have to be earned through playing the game.

None of the content is restricted except for the 4 expansion souls, you have to buy those. You can lvl to the max and do everything there is to do in the game without paying a dime though.

Edit: There is 1 restriction, you can't use the Auction House until you've spent $5, this is to prevent gold farmers from exploiting. But once you have, you can use it forever.

Guild Wars 2 was probably the best MMO gaming experience I've had before I reached the level cap. After that, there's not much else to do other than help lower ranks out. While it's not F2P, the business model is quite generous compared to others. Also keep an eye out for Wildfire; developed by the same company as Guild Wars with a business model that rewards subscription time if you play it enough.
WoW is always there - still an active community.
Aion, while I've never played it, has a lot of followers.
Diablo's not a MMO but it's similar to one; the expansion pack is awesome.

WoW is out-dated and has a terrible community, it's basically the LoL of MMOs, 90% of the people still playing it, only play it because they can't cut ties with the people they developed relationships with on there, most of them fully admit to that when confronted about it as well.

Aion is god aweful, I played it at launch and it was ok, went back a couple months ago and it hasn't aged well. Somehow it looks and runs worse on a better machine than when I originally played it, and it's UI will make you want to punch your monitor.

Diablo is totally not an MMO, at all, in any sense of the word. Not even remotely similar.

WoW is dated, but since when in the entire gaming community has that stopped anyone from fully enjoying a game, unless you don't appreciate anything in a game except from graphical fidelity?
Also, the community within WoW, like all games, have their good and bad counterparts. If you stop playing a game simply because you get butt-hurt every time someone disses a family member, you shouldn't be playing video games in the first place. Be prepared to persevere through idiots and you'll see that it's actually a genre-defining game that has lead to a myriad of other, equally outstanding MMORPGs.

Like I said, I haven't played Aion as of yet, but it has a relatively large following and I hear the combat is very decent.

Again, my exact words were "Diablo's not a MMO but it's similar to one"
Massively Multiplayer online.
As far as I know, it has multiplayer.
Therefore, it can be considered similar to one, especially considering its RPG aspects - I didn't say it was an MMORPG.

That's some good feedback considering I just dropped $70 + $25 shipping on a collectors edition of GW2 as I haven't touched an MMO in literally years as they were always the same and felt like an actual job to get any sort of enjoyment out of it. After waiting to see how it matured over the past year and watching Angry Joe's review on it explaining all the things done right that made me want to pick it up. Looking forward to trying something new.

I pre-ordered Wildstar and have been plahing in the weekend Beta program.

It's a great game, IMO, and nearly ready for the May 31 head start for pre-orders and June 3 general release.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy that doesn't take itself too seriousy with incredile options for end game progression. Should be an awesome game for years and years to come.

I cancelled my sub to WoW and it ended on April 4 because I'll only ever have time for one MMORPG, and Wildstar has become that game.
