USB plugs becoming disabled mid-game - new build

Hey,

So I helped build a new PC for my friend... these are the specs:
Quote:
  • Intel Core i7 4770
  • Asus Z87-K
  • 8GB G.Skill Trident 2400mhz
  • Sapphire AMD R290
  • Samsung 840 Pro 256gb
  • Antec TruePower 650W
  • Roccat Kova
  • Corsair Vengeance K95

Now, all drivers were installed and the motherboard has two sets of USB slots. Some standard USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0 ports. When the PC is running normally, there is no issue.

However, during a game.. e.g. ARMA 2, sometimes the mouse will just... disconnect. The keyboard still works, but the mouse gone. If you try and plug a completely different mouse into that slot, it doesn't work again. This happens on both the USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports.

I don't think it's a motherboard hardware issue since other devices continue to work and plugging in a completely different device still doesn't work (until you reboot)... the mouse works fine on another PC.

Anyone any ideas what the issue may be? it's an odd one.

Sounds like you have a static shock/short, probably through the mouse, but since you switched the mouse is it possibly Corsair? Do you notice it happen right after you touch something? Perhaps the chasis with your foot (another method for shock?) I have experienced it, even a tiny shock disabled all my USB peripherals for a good few minutes, sometimes requiring re-plugging, sometimes needing a full reboot.

I would also check the PCH voltage (since the USB controllers on the board itself) it possibly could be too low.

Also, try installing the Intel USB3 driver latest version and INF Update Utility from Intel. The Chipeset, USB2.0, Storage Controller is in the INF Update Utility, USB3.0 is kept separate. I wouldn't get them from your Motherboard manufacturer, Intel always has the latest and greatest.

I had a problem exactly like this except after replugging the mouse it would work again, then shut off..

the mouse was bad. It would work but it was inconsistent

Thanks for your advice... we did some testing and found it's reproducible... under some very strange circumstances.

So, it *only* happens when my friend tries to use in game talk in Arma 2. When he tries to do it, the USB ports die for his mouse until he reboots. If he doesn't use in game voice chat, and uses say Teamspeak instead, it works perfectly.

Why the hell would in game voice chat be killing his USB ports? Truly bizarre...

Update BIOS

If that still doesn't work:

Disable VT-d

I don't know if virtual anything just being enabled would have to do with this, devices or not.

Basically Virtual Technology with direct memory access to device enablement. May be called something slightly different for you.

It is possible ARMA II / DirectX is having an exception and DirectInput is crashing as a result. Anything in the EventViewer?

VT-d (intel) and IOMMU (AMD) can cause lots of headaches if the software side isn't up to snuff to support the implementation, especially on machines with newer controllers, and in this case, on a chipset that doesn't officially support VT-d. Even when you're not even trying to use the technology for what it is designed for, it can cause problems with access to devices.

It's right in the UEFI BIOS, the setting is called VT-d. I looked it up in the motherboard manual before my previous post to see if it had that feature. It does. It may not solve this problem but it is worth a shot.

Anything is possible, can't hurt to disable and give it a try. I have seen weirder things happen.

Let us know how it goes 98uk.
