[DS] The Witcher 3 - 900p on PS4 & 720p on Xbox One, GTX780Ti Pushes 35-45fps At Max Settings - Page 12

Well, they did say "Max" settings...not effective settings...not playable settings...they were bench marking and when you benchmark a GPU you want as much work flowing as possible. If you want 8xMSAA and have a 780ti...you have to live with 35fps or so, but if you just want 60fps and 4xAA I am sure the 780 will be fine.

It is a shame really. Back when we really needed 8xAA we were lucky to get 4xAA...now that we have as high as 32xAA...we really only need 4xAA or less depending on your monitor. That was a lot of development that is really just getting thrown out.

I understand. Just hoping people here can distinguish the difference themselves, otherwise they'll be wildly disappointed when they see the graphics are actually in line with our current standard (and they just bought 2 780 Ti's for this.)

I believe one of the reasons why uber high AA levels are often implemented is that it is trivial to do without much dev time needed to enable it. so if you are not particularly demanding game you just ramp up AA to the orbit in your "Ultra" settings and rest on laurels when game review sites praise it for needing quad SLI titans to run at "max settings". Now do not get me wrong, it is good to have options, even if some of the options are meaningless for majority of the users, but having an option is good thing. "Problem" is if review focuses on something that very little people will find useful in reality at the expense of investigating features that would be of interest to wider audience. Say, for example, focusing on ubersampling benchmark at 4K instead of doing the said benchmark at 4K with "reasonable" AA level but measuring also, for example, the frame times to spot if the engine has unnatural lag-spikes somewhere.

Exactly. In fact, I don't really think you even need 2xAA. at 1080p. With just FXAA at high, everything's fine I guess.

Honestly I feel the exact opposite. It always ticks me off when a game comes with crappy AA settings. Some of you claim to not notice the difference between 4xMSAA and 8xMSAA. Good for you I guess. Personally I can easily tell the differences between 4xMSAA and 8xMSAA. Depending on the game its usually still not overly hard to pick out the differences between 8xMSAA and 16xMSAA.

Same goes for 2xSSAA vs 4xSSAA.

Does that mean I use extremely high AA levels? Yes and no. If I have enough GPU power to run a game at max settings and 16xMSAA damn strait I'm going to enable it as it does improve the IQ but its not like have have to have that amount of AA for the game to be enjoyable. I do usually want something in line with 4xMSAA and I'm willing to sacrifice some other settings like AO or DoF to get it.

I'm not a fan of pure shader based AA like FXAA. In order to get rid of the jaggies properly you need to run it at an pretty aggressive setting and that meant you end up blurring the textures as well.

Really as you say implementing AA should not be that much of an challenge for devs so by that reasoning the devs should spend that little time and put in lots of AA options so everyone can use the amount they want. I applaud any dev that puts in a good array of AA options and lest the end user select if they want to use SSAA, MSAA, TXAA ect. and most of all I very much like it when they separate out FXAA and allow you to run it along side render based AA. For example in Max Payne is ran something like 4xMSAA + high FXAA and that gave some pretty nice results.

Well - my argument was not that high level AA should not be supported. If anything then I like to have an option. My argument was that in my opinion review sites put a perhaps too much emphasis on running a game on "max" settings that include very high level of AA more often than not. As far as dev hours going into AA go I must say that I am not an expert - my understanding of game development is rather .. well .. layman way. For me it sounds simple as in essence what you do is just run the thing at higher resolution and then throw in some kind of down-sampling algorithm. Or just run some aspect of the scene higher resolution and downsample if it's not a supersampling AA. That sort of sounds simple when compared to, say, having higher resolution textures in game or better and more varied animations or having a dynamic lighting or small amount of ray-tracing or something else like that in game. The latter sounds to me like it would take more dev hours to implement.

Well, the game won't be released until February, so I would take those figures with a pinch of salt...code optimization and driver optimization are still a looooong way...

Nonetheless, it is good to see that after all bells & whistles are enabled, a single 780Ti can put out 35-45 fps biggrin.gif
